Girvan is the grain distillery born out of necessity and defiance. When rival distilleries cut off grain whisky supplies to William Grant & Sons' blends, the family responded by building its own vast complex at record speed. For beginners, Girvan is rarely a name in its own right, but rather the invisible backbone of countless blended whiskies; for connoisseurs, it's one of Scotland's most important, if least publicized, distilleries, a whisky workhorse whose significance far outweighs its public profile.

History & Background

In the early 1960s, William Grant & Sons faced a problem: rival producers refused to sell grain whisky to the family's blends. The solution was to build its own grain distillery, and in just nine months the Girvan complex rose on Scotland's west coast. The first spirit ran from the stills on Christmas Day 1963, and casks from that very first fill still sit untouched in one of the distillery's warehouses to this day. Since then, Girvan has grown into one of Scotland's most productive grain distilleries and a central piece of William Grant & Sons' portfolio of blends.

Production & Style

Girvan primarily produces grain whisky through continuous distillation in patent stills, an entirely different method from the pot-still distillation used for single malt.
