Miles Madeira

A historic Madeira house with roots going back to 1815. Chris Blandy is the seventh generation of a family that has shaped not just Madeira wine, but the island's entire history. Following a partnership with the Symington family of Porto, the house today stands as one of the driving forces behind Madeira's revival as a serious wine category.

Miles is one of Madeira's smaller but respected houses, and this 1996 vintage is bottled after more than two decades of ageing.

    Expert's Description

Miles Tinta Negra 1996 Rich Madeiravin is a Fortified Wine from Portugal made from Tinta Negra, bottled at 19% ABV.

The wine is vintage-dated 1996 and was bottled in 2017 after many years of ageing in oak. The Rich designation shows it is a sweet style, where the long ageing has given the wine a golden colour with mahogany tones and great complexity.

About Miles Madeira

Miles Madeira Wine Company is one of the historic Madeira houses, founded in 1815 on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

History & Background

Miles Madeira Wine Company is one of the historic Madeira houses, founded in 1815, shortly after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, at a time when British trading families dominated the export of Madeira wine. Over more than two centuries the house has survived several crises, including the phylloxera outbreak in the late 1800s, which destroyed large parts of the island's vineyards. Miles today owns one of the oldest and best-stocked wine cellars on the island, with reserves that in some cases date back several generations. The house is regarded as one of the most respected and tradition-bound names in Madeira production.

Production & Style

The wine is made by adding grape spirit during fermentation, after which it is aged and deliberately heated, a process called estufagem.

Signature Style

Caramelized, Nutty, Complex
The wine offers a caramelized, nutty character with a complex, oxidative finish.
