The Antiquary Whisky traces its roots back to 1861 in Edinburgh, but was only registered as a brand by J&W Hardie Ltd in 1888. The whisky was named in honor of Sir Walter Scott's novel 'The Antiquary'. By the early 1980s, the brand was a global sensation, widespread across a range of countries in Europe, South America, and Japan, and today its largest markets are France, Portugal, Russia, Angola, and the UK. The distillery has changed hands several times, most recently in 1996 when Tomatin Distillery Co. Ltd took over ownership, and in 2015 the bottles received a major design overhaul to appeal to younger whisky buyers.
