The Hanyu distillery in Saitama closed in 2000, seemingly forgotten, until founder's descendant Ichiro Akuto rescued the last remaining casks from destruction. He bottled them into what is now the legendary 'Card Series', each bottle named after a playing card - and unintentionally created some of the world's most expensive Japanese whiskies. A complete card set today is worth more than most homes.

The whisky is named after Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish businessman who played a central role in opening Japan to the West at the end of the Edo period. Adelphi Selection, an independent Scottish bottler founded in 1993, composed this fusion of Japanese and Scotch malt whisky as a tribute to Glover's historic ties between the two countries.

About Hanyu

Hanyu is a closed Japanese distillery from Saitama, whose final casks were rescued and bottled by Ichiro Akuto in the now-famous 'Card Series'. For a newcomer, Hanyu is practically unobtainable; for the connoisseur, it is pure legend - a story of a distillery reborn as mythology after its own death, where single bottles from the card series now sell for sums that outstrip entire other whisky categories combined.

The Akuto family later carried their passion forward at the now-famous Chichibu distillery, and the last Hanyu casks were bottled in the iconic "Card Series", named after playing card motifs.

History & Background

The Hanyu distillery was located in the town of the same name northwest of Tokyo and was run by the Toa company until financial trouble forced it to close in 2000. The stills were scrapped in 2004, but founder Isouji Akuto's grandson, Ichiro Akuto, rescued around 400 remaining casks and later bottled them under the now-legendary playing-card-themed "Card Series," which made Hanyu one of the most sought-after Japanese whisky names among collectors worldwide.
