Plymouth Gin

In southwest England, by the harbour that for centuries sent the English fleet out to sea, stands the Black Friars Distillery. This is where Plymouth Gin was born, once so closely tied to sailors that it was a standard part of their rations and even gave its name to the Pink Gin cocktail. This is gin with saltwater in its veins.

The building's roots go back to the 1400s as a monastery for the Black Friars, and it was from here that the Pilgrim Fathers took their last walk on English soil before sailing on the Mayflower in 1620. Since 1793, the same site has housed a gin distillery.

    Expert's description

Plymouth Gin is an English Gin distilled at Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth and bottled at 41.2%.

Black Friars Distillery is England's oldest working gin distillery, with records of a 'mault-house' on the site dating back to 1697. In 1793, the Coates family took over the building and converted it into a distillery for 'Plymouth Gin'.

The building's history stretches back even further: the Refectory, with its distinctive hull-shaped timber roof, was built in 1431, and the site originally served as a monastery for the Black Friars.

Plymouth Gin is known for an earthy, root-driven character that sets it apart from the more citrus-led London Dry style, and the name is protected as a geographical indication.

Following a classic recipe from 1883, sloe berries are slowly and gently steeped in Plymouth Gin, soft Dartmoor spring water and a small amount of sugar for about four months, where the low sugar level lets the full flavour and tartness of the berries shine through.

    Expert's description

Plymouth Sloe Gin is an English sloe gin made from Plymouth Gin, bottled at 26%.

The gin is built on botanicals from Plymouth Gin, including juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, lemon peel, angelica root, green cardamom and orris root, infused with sloe berries.

The berries steep for around four months in Plymouth Gin, soft Dartmoor water and a small amount of sugar, following the classic 1883 recipe.

The deliberately low sugar level lets the tart, dry character of the fruit play an important role in the flavour rather than drowning it in sweetness.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers juniper berries, almonds, citrus aromas, sloe berries and tart cherry.

    Palate

The palate is clean with notes of orange and lemon peel, herbs and sloe berries, where sweet and tart play together in good balance.

    Finish

The finish is crisp and long.

About Plymouth

Plymouth Gin offers exciting gin created in southwest England, originally for the English Navy. Black Friars Distillery is the maker behind Plymouth Gin. For the newcomer, the style is softer and earthier compared to sharper London Dry gins, with distinct root notes; for the connoisseur, Plymouth Gin holds a protected geographical status, much like champagne, meaning only gin distilled within the city of Plymouth itself may carry the name, a status no other gin brand in the world holds.

History & Background

Black Friars Distillery was established in a former 15th-century Dominican friary building in Plymouth in 1793, making it one of the oldest continuously operating gin houses in England. Gin from here quickly became a fixture of the English Navy's rations, and tradition holds that officers on board mixed it with Angostura Bitters to settle seasickness, giving rise to the Pink Gin cocktail. Today, Plymouth Gin is the only gin in the world with its own protected designation of origin.

Production & Style

The gin is distilled with an earthy botanical blend, giving it a softer, less sharp profile than many London Dry styles.

Signature Style
