History & Background

Black Friars Distillery was established in a former 15th-century Dominican friary building in Plymouth in 1793, making it one of the oldest continuously operating gin houses in England. Gin from here quickly became a fixture of the English Navy's rations, and tradition holds that officers on board mixed it with Angostura Bitters to settle seasickness, giving rise to the Pink Gin cocktail. Today, Plymouth Gin is the only gin in the world with its own protected designation of origin.
