Compass Box Blended Malt Whisky

Compass Box is the company that named every single component in its whisky, at a time when the industry otherwise thrived on secrecy. John Glaser, an American in Scotland, built an entire house on the idea that transparency and creativity could beat old conventions.

  • Compass Box Crimson Casks blended malt bottle in deep red design
    Item no.: 22227865475-19134

John Glaser came from the wine world before he made whisky. Crimson Casks is probably the clearest evidence — sherry and red wine casks, put together the way a wine blender would have done it.

    Expert description

Compass Box Crimson Casks is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46% without chill filtration and without added colouring.

The bottle arrived in 2024 as part of the house core collection and is built around the influence of sherry and red wine casks. Compass Box was founded in 2000 by the American John Glaser, formerly marketing director at Johnnie Walker, and the house has since made its name by treating blending as a craft on a level with distilling. Bottling without chill filtration and without colouring is standard at Compass Box — they want the cask to speak unedited.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark berries and raisin first, then orange peel, cinnamon and a warm note of toasted oak. A lightly tart fruit note from the red wine casks sits behind.

    Palate

Rich and layered. Cherry, fig, dark chocolate and spice, with a malt sweetness holding it all together. The 46% gives structure without tightening things up.

    Finish

Long and warm, with dried fruit, cocoa and a dry, lightly tannic close.

    Did you know?

Compass Box has clashed with industry rules more than once. When the house published the exact age composition of its blends in 2015, it was technically against EU regulations — and it set off a debate about transparency that is still running in Scotch whisky.

  • Compass Box Nectarosity blended malt bottle in pale design
    Item no.: 22227865475-19135

The name is invented, and it fits rather well. Nectarosity tries to catch the fruit sweetness that appears when pale malt and active American oak are given long enough together.

    Expert description

Compass Box Nectarosity is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46% without chill filtration and without added colouring.

The whisky matured in a combination of first fill bourbon casks, refill sherry puncheons and custom made American oak casks. The three cask types pull in different directions — vanilla and coconut from the bourbon wood, dried fruit from the sherry, and a softer spiced sweetness from the bespoke oak. Compass Box has since 2000 worked on the principle that the recipe should be told openly, and the house publishes the composition of its blends.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peach, apricot and pale honey. Under the fruit sit vanilla, coconut and a light floral note.

    Palate

Fruit-sweet and round. Caramel, ripe pear, orange and vanilla, with a malt core keeping the sweetness in check. The 46% gives a decent grip without turning hard.

    Finish

Medium and soft, with honey, pale caramel and a dry, spiced close.

Compass Box does not just blend whisky — it also has casks built to order. By commissioning custom American oak with a specified toast, the house can aim at a flavour direction that does not exist in ordinary refill wood.

    Expert Review

Orchard House Compass Box Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 46% is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46% ABV.

This blended malt from Orchard House has a lovely aroma of apple and pear, with hints of pineapple, lemon and lime zest. Compass Box is known for composing its whiskies from selected malt components sourced from several distilleries, rather than focusing on the character of a single one.

    Tasting Notes

The nose is fruity with apple, pear and a touch of citrus.

    Palate

The palate is light and fresh, with pineapple, lemon and a mild sweetness.

    Finish

The finish is short to medium, fresh and citrus-driven.

  • The Story of The Spaniard Compass Box Blended Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865475-8267

A bar in New York, a glass created for the occasion, and a story that grew too good to tell only once. The Story of The Spaniard is Compass Box's tribute to Spanish cask tradition, told by John Glaser himself.

    Expert description

The Story of The Spaniard is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43% ABV by independent whisky merchant Compass Box, founded by American John Glaser.

The whisky originates from a bespoke bottling Compass Box once created for a cocktail bar named The Spaniard in New York. John Glaser and his team later decided to explore the sherry-influenced style further and make it a permanent part of the range under the name The Story of The Spaniard, first released in 2018.

The whisky is a blend of Highland and Speyside malt whisky, of which a significant portion, around 48%, is matured in used sherry casks, while a further 25% has aged in casks that previously held Spanish red wine. The rest of the blend contributes lighter, fruitier notes that balance the heavier, dark cask influence.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked pear in red wine meets dark berries and a hint of spiced citrus peel.

    Palate

Full, soft and tangy with juicy poached pears, citrus peel and warm spice.

    Finish

Long and elegant, with vanilla panna cotta, berries and cherries fading slowly.

About Compass Box Blended Malt Whisky

Compass Box was founded in 2000 by American John Glaser, who left a career in the mainstream whisky industry to start his own blending house focused on transparency and creative cask treatment. The company blends single malts, single grains and occasionally older stocks into signature releases like Hedonism and The Spice Tree, and is known for disclosing components and ages on the label, still rare in the industry. Collectors chase the limited, often quickly sold-out releases, while newcomers find an accessible, well-balanced entry point into high-quality blended whisky.

History & Background

John Glaser worked for years at large spirits companies in the US and Scotland before deciding in 2000 to start Compass Box in London, built on the idea that whisky blending could be as creative and transparent as the world of wine writing. The company quickly became known for challenging Scotch whisky's labelling rules, including a public 2015 campaign to be allowed to disclose all components and their ages on the label. Compass Box owns no distilleries of its own but buys and matures casks from across Scotland, and has since 2000 won a wealth of international awards for its innovative blends.

The house was founded in 2000 by American John Glaser, who set out to make blending a respected craft rather than an industrial process.
