Glen Elgin Whisky

Glen Elgin was built in 1898-1900, the last new distillery in Speyside before a long stretch of stagnation across the industry. It quickly became a fixture in the White Horse blend and has since kept an unusually low profile for a distillery of its quality. Whisky maker Peter Mackie is said to have insisted on waiting extra years for Glen Elgin, since no other malt could replace it in the blend.

  • Glen Elgin Adelphi Selection Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle from a bourbon cask
    Item no.: 22227865449-18416

Adelphi picks casks by tasting their way through and saying no to most of them. It is an old fashioned way to work, and it is the reason their labels are so plain, because there is no room for anything except what is actually in the cask.

    The expert description

Glen Elgin 13 Years Old Adelphi Selection is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single bourbon cask and bottled at cask strength 54.6%.

The cask, number C802276, gave 302 bottles. Adelphi Selection takes its name from a Glasgow distillery that closed in 1907, and the name was revived in 1993 for an independent bottling house. Every release is a single cask at cask strength, without chill filtration and without colouring.

Glen Elgin is one of the distilleries Adelphi returns to. The house fruitiness is clear and stands up to high strength, and a bourbon cask lets it show without being wrapped in dark fruit.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pineapple and ripe melon first, then vanilla custard and a touch of green banana from the American wood.

    Palate

Concentrated and sweet. Tropical fruit and honey in front, then a creamy middle and a growing note of white pepper.

    Finish

Long and dry with oak, malt and a final cool note of mint.

Fruity · Tropical · Creamy · Spiced · Cask Strength

    Investment potential

Medium. Adelphi bottles single casks in small runs and has a settled international collector following, and at 302 bottles this is among the smaller releases. Glen Elgin also appears rarely as a single malt, which keeps the field narrow.

    Did you know?

Glen Elgin has for decades been the backbone of White Horse, one of the great Scottish blends. Most of the production disappears in that direction, which is why the distillery is far better known among blenders than among malt drinkers.

  • Glen Elgin Adelphi Selection 20 years old Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0079

Twenty years is a long time to leave a cask to get on with it. Adelphi emptied this one in 2016, and it had been filled in 1995, a decade before most people started caring what Glen Elgin actually tasted like on its own.

    The expert description

Glen Elgin 1995/2016 Adelphi Selection 20 Years Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single cask and bottled at cask strength 53.1%.

The cask, number 3216, was filled in 1995 and bottled in 2016. It gave 210 bottles, which is few even by Adelphi standards. Like the rest of the house releases it is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour.

Twenty years does something to the Glen Elgin fruitiness. The fresh, almost tropical character that marks the younger bottlings pulls towards dried fruit and wax, and the weight the spirit takes from the worm tubs is given room to come through. That the strength still sits at 53.1% after two decades says something about how dry that cask lay.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dried apricot and peach, honey on toast, and a waxy note like old furniture timber.

    Palate

Deep and oily. Yellow fruit and caramel do the carrying, while the malt steps forward in the middle and the oak lays a dry spiced edge beneath.

    Finish

Very long with mineral, white pepper and a final sweetness of honey and oak.

    Investment potential

Medium. Twenty years in wood, a single cask and only 210 bottles from a distillery that supplies almost entirely to blends. Age stated Glen Elgin bottlings over twenty years have become noticeably harder to find as the older stocks have been drawn down.

    Did you know?

Glen Elgin was rebuilt in 1964 and went from two pot stills to six. The rebuild tripled capacity, but the distillery kept its worm tubs, a decision that is today the reason the whisky carries more body than the numbers suggest.

  • Glen Elgin Murray McDavid Cask Craft Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 222275555-55527

Glen Elgin does not make peated whisky. But a cask that has held Islay malt remembers what it contained, and that is the detour Murray McDavid has taken to get smoke into a Speyside malt.

    The expert description

Glen Elgin Murray McDavid Craft Cask Peated Finish is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a bourbon cask and finished in a bourbon cask from Islay, bottled at 44.5%.

The release belongs to Cask Craft, the Murray McDavid range where the wood is the entire starting point. The series is put together by the house Head of Whisky Creations, Dean Jode, and this edition carries the subtitle Smoke & Citrus.

The method is simple and effective. The whisky sits first in an ordinary bourbon cask and is then moved into a bourbon cask that previously held peated Islay malt. The cask gives up the peat smoke it has absorbed, and the result is a Speyside fruitiness with a smoky edge it would never have had on its own. The whisky is bottled in natural colour as batch number PEAT-01.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Citrus peel and ripe pear first, then a dry smoke note that creeps in, and vanilla beneath it all.

    Palate

Fresh and fruity up front with orange and yellow fruit, while the smoke builds slowly and lays an ash and pepper note underneath.

    Finish

Medium with citrus, dry smoke and a final malty sweetness.

Glen Elgin was in its time one of the few Diageo malts to get an official bottling in the Flora & Fauna range. For most malt drinkers that was where they first met the distillery, and for many the only time, before the independent bottlers took over.

  • Glen Elgin Tapestry Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle from three cask types
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0106

It is called Tapestry because three cask types are woven together rather than following one another. That is a different idea from the classic finish, where one cask gets the last word.

    The expert description

Glen Elgin 2009/2022 Tapestry 13 Years Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in oloroso sherry casks, Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and bourbon casks, bottled at 50%.

The whisky was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2022 after thirteen years. Tapestry is a range from the Uncharted Whisky Company, founded by the Scot Jack Breslin and the Dutch-German Dana de Vos, who both worked in the whisky trade for many years before setting up on their own.

The three cask types each pull in their own direction. The bourbon casks give vanilla and pale fruit, oloroso adds nut and dried fruit, and Pedro Ximenez brings the dark, almost syrupy sweetness. Put together they land on a profile none of them would have given alone. The whisky is bottled at 50% without chill filtration and without colouring.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin and dried apricot first, then vanilla and walnut, with a note of dark syrup in the background.

    Palate

Full and layered. Yellow fruit and honey from the bourbon wood, dates and nut from the sherry, and a dark sweetness tying it together.

    Finish

Long and warm with dried fruit, a touch of cinnamon and a dry oak close.

    Did you know?

The Glen Elgin fruitiness is no accident. It comes from clear wort, long fermentation and slow distillation, which together clean the sulphur notes out of the spirit, and only afterwards does the whisky get its weight back from the distillery worm tubs.
