Ron Abuelo Rum

Ron Abuelo simply means 'grandfather', a tribute to the man who began distilling rum in Panama's interior in the early 1900s. The Varela family formalized the business in 1936, and the name has since become a quiet acknowledgment of the legacy carried forward from generation to generation. Today the grandfather's vision lives on in one of Latin America's most respected rum productions.

About Ron Abuelo

Ron Abuelo is produced by Varela Hermanos, Panama's largest and oldest rum producer, rooted in the family's own sugarcane farming. For newcomers, Ron Abuelo is an accessible entry into Panamanian rum - soft, caramel-driven and without the sharp edge found in heavier Caribbean styles. For collectors, the interest ties to Master Blender Francisco "Don Pancho" Fernández, one of the rum world's most respected names, whose solera-based ageing method runs through the entire range, from the youngest to the oldest expression.

History & background

The Varela family began growing sugarcane and producing rum in Panama in the early 1900s, and the company Varela Hermanos was formalised in 1936. The name Ron Abuelo - "grandfather rum" - honours the family's founder and the legacy carried on through generations since. Today Varela Hermanos remains family-owned and is one of the few major Latin American rum producers controlling the entire process from cane field to bottle.

Production & style

The rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice in copper column stills and matured in American oak casks using the classic solera method, where younger rum is gradually blended with older vintages to ensure a consistent, deep flavour.
