  Diplomatico Mantuano is a Blended Rum from Venezuela, composed of distillates from several different still types and bottled at 40%.

  The rum comes from the DUSA distillery in La Miel at the foot of the Andes, where Diplomático blends distillates from column stills, a rare batch kettle and traditional pot stills. Mantuano is the brand's best-selling expression and works as a calling card for the whole range: a blend of younger and older rums, matured in oak casks that previously held bourbon and malt whisky, for up to 8 years. The name pays tribute to Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, known as "El Mantuano," and to the old Venezuelan upper class's appreciation of quality.

  The rum comes from Destilerías Unidas in La Miel, Venezuela, founded in 1959 and today part of the Brown-Forman group. After 6 years of maturation, Planas is charcoal filtered to remove the colour, making it well suited for cocktails where you don't want to alter the drink's hue, while retaining the soft, age-driven flavour notes from cask maturation. The slightly higher strength of 47% gives the rum extra weight and character compared to the house's more accessible releases.

  Rich vanilla with fresh coconut, lemon and black tea, plus a hint of oily lemon rind.

  Palate

  Chewy toffee and a fresh, grassy note, with heat from fresh chilli, sweet barley sugar, citrus zest and a touch of espresso.

  Some vintages simply linger. 2008 was such a year at Destilerías Unidas in Venezuela - casks that matured into something beyond the ordinary, which the distillery chose to see all the way through with a long finish in sherry casks.

  Diplomatico Single Vintage 2008 Sherry Cask Finish is a Venezuelan Rum distilled in 2008 and bottled at 43%.

  The rum belongs to Diplomatico's Prestige Range, where a Single Vintage is only released in years when selected casks from a single distillation year turn out to have developed exceptionally. The base is cane molasses, and part of the rum's weight comes from the distillery's signature method - batch kettle distillation on pot still - which gives a heavier, more oily rum than most column still-based rums.

  After 12 years of maturation in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, ex-single malt whisky casks and new American oak casks, the rum was moved onto first-fill Oloroso sherry casks for a final finishing period. It is here the dark, dried fruits and the spiced sweetness really settle into the glass.

  Nose

  Smoked wood, roasted coffee and dark chocolate settle first, before vanilla and ripe, sweet fruit come forward.

  Palate

  Full-bodied and round on the palate, with a touch of red berries and a lingering, soft warmth from the sherry casks.
