Most white rums go straight from the still to the bottle. Abuelo does it differently, letting its white expression rest in oak before the colour is filtered back out.

    Expert description

Abuelo Añejo Blanco is a Rum from Panama, distilled on both pot still and column still and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from the Varela Hermanos distillery, a family-run company that has distilled rum from molasses grown on its own sugarcane fields in Pesé since 1908. Unlike most white rums, Añejo Blanco actually spends time in oak casks before being filtered to remove the colour again. That gives it a body and roundness usually found only in darker rums, but without the colour, and with a clean, bright style built for cocktails.

Frequently asked questions about Abuelo Añejo Blanco

    What is Abuelo Añejo Blanco?

It is a white Rum from Panama that is aged in oak casks before being filtered for colour. It combines a clean, white style with the body normally gained from cask ageing.

What does Abuelo Añejo Blanco taste like?

Fresh and citrusy with a sweet opening, a full texture and a short, softly rounded finish of vanilla.

Is Abuelo Añejo Blanco good for cocktails?

Yes, it is built for exactly that. Its clean, fresh style with a bit of extra body makes it a solid choice in a Daiquiri, Mojito and other classic white rum cocktails.

Why is Abuelo Añejo Blanco aged if it is white?

Cask ageing gives the rum a roundness and depth that an unaged white rum lacks. The colour is then filtered out afterwards, so the style stays clean and white.

What distillation method is used for Abuelo Añejo Blanco?

Varela Hermanos uses both pot still and column still, giving the rum a more complex character than a purely column-distilled white rum.

Where does Abuelo Añejo Blanco come from?

It comes from Varela Hermanos in Pesé, Panama, a family-owned company that has distilled rum since 1908 and grows its own sugarcane.
