The Scottish independent bottler Dràm Mòr keeps the cards close to its chest about this rhum agricole from Martinique, but the cask strength speaks for itself.

    Expert Description

A Secret Martinique Distillery 6 Year Dram Mor Single Cask is a Martinique Rhum Agricole aged 6 years in a single ex-bourbon cask and bottled at cask strength, 54%.

Only 249 bottles were filled from this single cask, without reduction or chill filtration, preserving the rum's full, uncompromised character.

    Expert Description

The rum is distilled on the copper still "La Belle Aline" with seven plates, with no reduction of the final strength, giving both a raw and refined experience. The cuvée honours Paul Octave, the farmer behind the specific sugar cane parcel used for this release, reflecting A1710's wish to highlight its close collaboration with Martinique's cane growers. • Clément Créole Shrubb D'Orange rum liqueur Martinique bottle
    Item no.: 22227865449-8790

Créole Shrubb is the house's take on an old Martinique tradition, where bitter orange peel is left to steep in rum for a full year, not just a couple of weeks.

    Expert Description

Clément Créole Shrubb D'Orange is a Martinique Rum Liqueur flavoured with orange peel and bottled at 40%.

The base is a blend of young and six-year-old cask-aged rhum agricole from Habitation Clément, which is combined and then aged with orange peels in 250-litre oak casks for a full year. That's an unusually long maceration period for a shrubb liqueur, giving the orange aromas time to penetrate deep into the rum before the blend is sweetened with natural cane syrup and bottled.

The result is a liqueur where both the bitter and sweet sides of the orange come through, supported by a distinct spice profile from the long cask ageing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Orange peel and acacia honey, with a hint of white pepper and green, herbal cane.

    Palate

Rich orange and mandarin peel with white chocolate, vanilla and honey, carried by an enlivening black pepper.

  • Clément Mahina Coco coconut rum liqueur Martinique bottle
    Item no.: 22227865449-8789

Three ingredients, one goal: capturing the taste of a fresh, young coconut on Martinique. Mahina Coco deliberately keeps it simple, where many other coconut liqueurs reach for artificial flavourings.

    Expert Description

Clément Mahina Coco is a Martinique Coconut Rum Liqueur made from young coconuts, rum and cane syrup, bottled at 18%.

The liqueur from Habitation Clément is built on just three ingredients: fresh, unripe coconut, the house's own rhum agricole and natural cane syrup. This minimalist approach stands in contrast to many international coconut liqueurs, which often use added flavourings to achieve a strong coconut taste. The name Mahina is Polynesian for "moon", a reference to the round, white coconut and to Martinique's tropical, island-inspired mood.

The result is a round, natural coconut liqueur where the agricole-based rum can still be traced as a light, herbal undertone.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Strong, fresh coconut with tones of toasted coconut and freshly cut grass.

    Palate

Round and sweet with roasted nuts and sweet, fresh coconut flesh, balanced by a light acidity.

    Finish

Lingering with shredded coconut and a peppery hint from the underlying rum.

First harvest, first pressing, first bottle. Première Canne is Clément in its most unprocessed form, a white rum that lets the sugar cane speak, without a single cask allowed to interfere.

    Expert Description

Clément Première Canne is a Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc distilled from fresh sugar cane juice and bottled at 40%.

The rum is distilled at the Fonds-Préville distillery, while ageing and bottling take place at the historic Habitation Clément in Le François. After distillation the rum rests for nine months in stainless steel before being brought down to drinking strength with volcanic spring water from Martinique's mountains and bottled without cask ageing.

The name Première Canne, "first sugar cane", refers to the fresh, unprocessed style, where the soft floral notes and green, herbal character of the freshly harvested cane juice stand out clearly.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Soft fruit blossoms, yellow apple and citrus, complemented by greengage plum, herbal and fresh notes.

    Palate

Cocoa bean, bittersweet chocolate and black tea meet fresh grass and beans, closing on a graceful, lightly caramelised finish.

  • Clément Rare Cask Collection 2002 Abraham single cask rum bottle

Named after a person, not a place or a technique. Abraham is one of the individual casks in Clément's Rare Cask Collection, where each single cask gets its own name and its own story.

    Expert Description

Clément Rare Cask Collection 2002 Abraham is a Martinique Rhum Agricole from a single cask, distilled in 2002, aged 15 years and bottled at 56.6%.

The rum is column-distilled from fresh cane juice at Habitation Clément and has since rested 15 years in a single, selected cask, before being bottled undiluted as part of the house's Rare Cask Collection. The series is defined by each cask being allowed to stand alone and be bottled under its own name, in this case Abraham, rather than being blended with other casks, giving each release its own personality. 391 bottles were produced from this cask.

After 15 years of maturation in Martinique's tropical climate, the rum has developed a deep complexity that sits far from the house's younger VSOP and XO editions.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fruity with liquorice and a mocha-like depth.

One cask, one vintage, 380 bottles. The Rare Cask Collection is where Clément lets a single, chosen barrel speak for itself, without blending it into the house's larger, better-known series.

    Expert Description

Clément Rare Cask Collection 2002 Angelique is a Martinique Rhum Agricole from a single cask and bottled at 53.4%.

The rum was distilled in 2002 at the Clément distillery at Habitation Clément in Le François, Martinique, from fresh sugar cane juice on column stills following the classic Rhum Agricole method. After more than 15 years of ageing, the cask, named Angelique, was bottled as a standalone single cask release with a total outturn of just 380 bottles, making it one of the rarest releases in the Rare Cask Collection.

As a Rhum Agricole, the base is fresh-pressed cane juice rather than molasses, giving a greener, more herbal and citrus-driven character than most molasses-based rums, a style that becomes even more pronounced after such extended ageing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Classic agricole character with mint and pineapple that unfolds slowly in the glass.

    Palate

Fresh with grass and citrus, carried by the persistent agricole character of the fresh cane juice.

    Finish

    Item no.: 22227865449-8385

A single cane variety, grown for its own sake. Canne Bleue is Clément's tribute to a cane variety that's harder to grow, but that delivers a far more intense rum in return.

    Expert Description

Clément Rhum Agricole Blanc Canne Bleue is a Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc distilled exclusively from the blue cane variety and bottled at 50%.

Canne Bleue, or "blue cane", is an older and less widely grown variety than the more common cane typically used in rhum agricole. The variety is known for a lower yield and for being more sensitive to weather conditions, but in return it delivers a markedly more intense and aromatic juice. Clément has chosen to bottle this edition uncut at 50%, a higher strength than the house's standard Blanc, precisely to let the cane variety's full character shine through.

The result is a rum that's even sharper and more mineral than the classic Rhum Blanc Agricole, with an intensity that demands respect.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Exotic fruit mixed with orange blossom, softened by light honey, along with pink pepper, green apples and fresh cane juice.

    Palate

Lively, dry and powerful with lime, herbs, white pepper and mineral freshness, supported by meringue and cucumber.

No barrels, no waiting. Clément Blanc Agricole goes from cane field to bottle in under a day, preserving a raw, green freshness that few rum styles can match.

    Expert Description

Clément Rhum Blanc Agricole is a Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc distilled from fresh cane juice and bottled at 40%.

The rum is produced at the Habitation Clément distillery in Le François, Martinique, one of the island's oldest and most respected distilleries, founded in 1887 by Homère Clément. The cane is harvested and pressed the same day, after which the juice is fermented and column-distilled within hours, a method at the heart of the AOC Martinique classification. The rum rests briefly in steel tanks after distillation, with no cask ageing, so the green, herbal character of the cane is preserved intact.

This unaged style is the backbone of the classic Ti' Punch and is used across Martinique as an everyday drink.

Select Barrel is Clément's take on an entry point into the older agricole rums, neither fully young nor fully old, but exactly the spot where cane and oak meet in good balance.

    Expert Description

Clément Rhum Vieux Agricole Select Barrel is a Martinique Rhum Agricole selected from particularly characterful casks and bottled at 40%.

Like the other Vieux expressions from Clément, the rum is distilled from fresh cane juice at Habitation Clément in Le François, then aged in French oak casks under Martinique's tropical climate. Select Barrel differs in that the finished product is assembled from casks chosen specifically for their balance of fruit, spice and wood, a process that gives a more approachable and softer style than the more uncompromising VSOP.

The result is a rum that retains the green, herbal cane character but with a rounder, more relaxed presentation thanks to the careful cask selection.

    Item no.: 22227865449-18960

From green and sharp to deep and round. Clément VSOP shows what French oak can do for a rhum agricole when it's given at least four years to settle.

    Expert Description

Clément Rhum Vieux Agricole VSOP is a Martinique Rhum Agricole aged at least four years in French oak casks and bottled at 42-45%.

The rum is distilled from fresh cane juice at Habitation Clément in Le François and then aged under Martinique's tropical sun, where evaporation is far faster than in a colder climate. The tropical climate forces the rum to absorb colour and flavour from the oak in a shorter time, giving VSOP surprising depth for its age. The casks have often previously held cognac or other French spirits, adding a light winey character to the agricole's typically green base.

The result balances the raw, herbal cane character with dried fruit, spice and a soft wood sweetness.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dried fruit and light vanilla, with a lingering hint of cane and freshly planed wood underneath.

    Palate

Round and spiced with brown sugar, toasted oak and a hint of apricot.

    Finish

    Item no.: 22227865449-311

Half new, half charred Limousin oak. Clément XO is the expression where the house goes furthest with its cask selection, and where the result moves far from the green, young agricole style.

    Expert Description

Clément Rhum Vieux Agricole XO is a Martinique Rhum Agricole aged at least six years in French Limousin oak casks and bottled at 42%.

The rum is distilled from fresh cane juice at Habitation Clément in Le François and then aged in a combination of casks, half of which are brand new and the other half heavily charred on the inside. This two-part cask strategy is at the heart of XO's character, where the new casks add spice and vanilla sweetness while the charred casks provide a deeper, smoky wood structure.

The combination of the two cask types over at least six years produces a rum markedly more complex than the house's younger VSOP, with a richness that approaches cognac in its elegance.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe apples and true cinnamon, accompanied by a discreet smoky note of charred wood, complemented by honeysuckle, candied orange peel and vanilla with hints of clove, black tea, nuts and dark chocolate.

    Palate

Very elegant with vanilla, liquorice and white pepper.

    Finish

A long fade of charred sugarcane, coconut custard, peppery spices and a delicate mineral wetness.

    Expert Description

Habitation St. Etienne 1998 Single Cask is a Martinique Rhum Agricole from a single cask, distilled in 1998 and bottled at 47.8%.

The rum is produced by Habitation Saint-Étienne, known as HSE, one of the foremost representatives of the AOC Martinique label for agricultural rum. The distillery owns a site in Gros-Morne, where the buildings and aqueduct are protected as a historic monument, while the actual distillation takes place in Simon, Le François. Rhum agricole differs from traditional molasses-based rum by being distilled directly from fresh sugarcane juice, giving it a more aromatic and precise style. This single cask release from 1998 is a rare example of older, unblended HSE rum.

The result is an aromatic, complex rum, where fresh sugarcane meets oak and spice in a long, elegant finish.

    Expert Description

Habitation St. Etienne 2002 Sherry Finish is a Martinique Rhum Agricole, finished in sherry casks, distilled in 2002 and bottled at 45%.

The rum is produced by Habitation Saint-Étienne (HSE), one of the leading AOC Martinique producers, known for distilling directly from fresh sugarcane juice. This 2002 vintage has undergone an extra finishing period in sherry casks, adding a sweet, nutty dimension to the classic, aromatic rhum agricole style. The sherry casks complement the fresh, grassy base with a layer of dried fruit and spice that sets this release apart from HSE's purer single cask editions.

The result is a full-bodied, complex rum, where the freshness of the sugarcane meets sherry sweetness and nutty notes in a long, rounded finish.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280423

HSE, one of Martinique's most respected rhum agricole houses, sends this release through American bourbon casks from Kentucky and Missouri for a warmer, more approachable profile.

    Expert Description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Black Sheriff American Barrel is a Martinique Rhum Agricole, a blend of rum between 3 and 4 years, distilled from fresh sugar cane juice and aged in American bourbon casks, bottled at 40%.

HSE, whose full name is Habitation Saint-Étienne, was revived in 1994 by Yves and José Hayot and took on its current identity as Rhum HSE in 2008. The Black Sheriff release uses exclusively casks from American bourbon producers in Kentucky and Missouri, giving the rum a warmer, more spiced sweetness than the fresher, more classic agricole style often associated with Martinique.

The result is a rich, aromatic rum where sweetness from the American oak meets classic agricole fruitiness.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and honey beneath elegant woody notes, with caramel and a hint of black pepper and nutmeg.

    Expert description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice and bottled at 40% with no prior cask ageing.

Because Martinique's AOC rules allow rhum agricole to be sold immediately after distillation with no minimum ageing requirement, the Blanc expression retains the full fresh, green cane character that is otherwise gradually softened by years of cask influence in the house's other releases such as VSOP and XO. This makes it the purest, most direct introduction to what rhum agricole from Martinique actually tastes like.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

An explosion of fresh aromas with dominant notes of fresh sugarcane and a light floral touch, complemented by tropical fruit, mashed banana and hibiscus.

    Expert Description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc is a Martinique Rhum Agricole, distilled from fresh sugar cane juice and bottled unaged at 50%.

This white rhum agricole from HSE, whose full name is Habitation Saint-Étienne, shows the distillate's pure character with no cask influence at all. Unlike the house's Black Sheriff, which ages in American bourbon casks, this release goes straight from the distillation column to the bottle, preserving the fresh, green intensity of the newly harvested cane. The intense, bold nose combines floral and fruity notes with a hint of white pepper, while the palate shows the cane's full ripeness.

The result is a clear, powerful rhum that shows Martinique's agricole tradition in its purest form.

    Expert description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Rhum Agricole Extra Vieux XO is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, blended from rums matured for at least a decade in carefully selected Cognac casks and bottled at 43%.

The XO expression draws on some of the oldest stocks in HSE's cellars at Habitation Saint-Étienne, some of which date back to the 1960s. Because the rum has rested in Cognac casks rather than the more common American oak, it takes on a deep amber colour and a profile that leans on Cognac tradition's finesse rather than rum's typical sweetness.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Complex yet not overwhelming, with light, fresh fruit notes, a grassy character and sweet mocha, complemented by pronounced notes of cocoa, mocha and pale tobacco with a hint of black pepper and nutmeg.

    Expert description

Habitation St. Etienne Martinique Très Vieux VSOP is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured in American oak casks and bottled at 45%.

The rum is distilled at the Simon distillery in Le François and then aged in the historic cellars at Habitation Saint-Étienne itself in Gros-Morne, where the Hayot family has restored the old sugarcane plantation since 1994. Because it is a Rhum Agricole, it is pressed exclusively from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, giving it a greener, creole starting point that the long ageing in American oak then layers with caramel and spice.

    Item no.: 22227865449-18955

Shrubb is an old Caribbean tradition where bitter orange peel is left to steep in rum for weeks. Rhum JM's version adds spice and vanilla to the mix, creating a liqueur far more complex than the name suggests.

    Expert Description

Rhum JM Shrubb D'Orange is a Martinique Rum Liqueur flavoured with bitter orange peel and bottled at 35%.

The base is a blend of white rum and three-year-old cask-aged rum from the Fonds-Préville distillery, macerated with bitter orange peel, natural cane syrup, and vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg for several weeks. The shrubb tradition dates back to a time when Caribbean households used citrus peel maceration in rum as a way to make full use of the fruit, long before it became a cocktail ingredient.

The result is a liqueur that sits somewhere between an English orange marmalade and a spiced digestif, where the mild agricole rum binds the orange's bitterness together with sweetness and spice.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Candied orange peel and cranberry-orange muffin, opening toward a bright orange sorbet.

    Item no.: 22227865449-18952

In the shadow of Mount Pelée, where the soil is black with volcanic ash, sits one of Martinique's oldest distilleries. Rhum JM is considered by many to be the first to ever put Rhum Agricole into production, and VO is the house's accessible entry point into the older, cask-aged style.

    Expert Description

Rhum JM VO is a Martinique Rhum Agricole aged in oak casks on volcanic terroir and bottled at 43%.

The rum is distilled at the Fonds-Préville distillery in Macouba, in the northeast of Martinique, where Rhum JM has been producing since 1845. The distillery sits at the foot of the active volcano Mount Pelée, and the volcanic soil is thought to give the sugar cane a particular mineral richness that later shows through in the rum. VO is the house's youngest cask-aged expression and a fitting starting point for exploring the older style.

After a short period in oak, the rum takes on a character that's lighter and more straightforward than the older VSOP and XO expressions, but already carries clear traces of wood and spice.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Heavy with oak and vanilla, complemented by dried fruit and coconut, opening with time in the glass toward grilled tropical fruit.

    Palate

Round and lightly toasted with natural sweetness, a hint of cinnamon, faint grassy character and a touch of banana.

    Item no.: 22227865449-18953

Two kinds of cask, two stretches of time. Rhum JM VSOP rests first in used bourbon barrels for three years, before being transferred to brand new American oak casks for another year, a double maturation that gives it more body than the house's younger VO.

    Expert Description

Rhum JM VSOP is a Martinique Rhum Agricole aged four years in ex-bourbon and new oak casks, bottled at 43%.

The rum comes from the Fonds-Préville distillery in Macouba, Martinique's smallest "rhumerie", which sits at the foot of the volcano Mount Pelée. After distillation the rum rests briefly in steel tanks before being aged three years in used bourbon barrels and then around a year more in brand new American oak casks, a combination that gives VSOP a markedly deeper and more complex profile than the house's younger VO.

The new oak casks impart a clear wood sweetness and spice that complement the green, herbal character of the fresh cane juice without overpowering it.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Did You Know?

Fonds-Préville is considered Martinique's smallest "rhumerie", yet also one of the most respected, in part because the distillery sits on the very land where Rhum JM's founder Jean-Marie Martin converted a sugar factory into a distillery in 1845.

  • Bottle of dark mahogany-coloured rum with gold-embossed Saint James label
    Item no.: 22227865379-10196

Twelve years in tropical heat does something entirely different to a cask than twelve years in a Scottish warehouse.

    Expert description

Saint James 12 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 12 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.

The long ageing in Martinique's tropical climate gives the rum a deep mahogany colour and a pronounced wood character, where notes of undergrowth and toasting gradually give way to softer cinnamon and prune notes. Because evaporation, the so-called "angels' share", happens far faster in the tropics than in temperate climates, a 12 year old Martinique rum achieves a cask influence that would take significantly longer in a colder climate.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dominant woody tones with dried prunes, dried fruit and nutmeg, complemented by vanilla and toasted oak.

    Palate

Sweet vanilla and prunes followed by toasted almonds and walnuts, in a juicy, not-too-sweet parade of dried fruit, raisins, grapes, guava and ripe apples.

    Finish

Full-bodied with melted, complex tannins and a closing roasted note.

    Did you know?

Because evaporation from the casks happens far faster in Martinique's tropical heat than in a colder climate, 12 years of ageing here corresponds to a far more intense cask influence than the same number of years would give in, say, Scotland.

Fifteen years in a cask can turn a rum into something close to a meditation object – this is Saint James' answer to exactly that.

    Expert description

Saint James 15 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 15 years in heavily toasted oak casks and bottled at 43%.

Fifteen years is the longest standard maturation in Saint James' age range, and the heavy toasting of the casks gives the rum a depth and complexity that puts it on par with the house's most ambitious releases. Where the 7 and 12 year expressions still carry a certain fruit-driven lightness, the 15 year is darker and more introspective in style.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Intense with woody and toasted tones, precious wood, spice, tobacco and cooked fruit, complemented by a hint of menthol.

    Palate

Elegant complexity with a mocha-tinged finish, where old cask dominates while fruit and menthol restore the balance.

    Finish

Very long and persistent with a high degree of refinement.

    Did you know?

The 15 year expression is the oldest fixed release in Saint James' core range, and the heavy toasting of the casks is a deliberate technique meant to give the rum extra depth after so many years of ageing in the warm climate.

    Item no.: 22227865379-10195

Some rums taste of sugarcane. This one tastes more of an old French wine cellar.

    Expert description

Saint James 7 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 7 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.

The rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice at the Saint James distillery in Sainte-Marie and then aged for seven years, giving it an unusual Cognac-like character rather than the greener, grassier expression many younger agricole rums show. The cask ageing adds dried fruit and a light "rancio" note more commonly associated with old grape brandies than rum.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fruity with pineapple, melon and red apple, complemented by peaches in syrup, light anise, yoghurt, coffee grounds, honey and vanilla, with a hint of cinnamon.

    Palate

Vanilla, allspice, ginger and lemon alternate, backed by dried fruit notes and cane sugar reminiscent of Martinique's AOC style.

    Finish

Balanced and light, with a Cognac-like softness that lingers.

    Did you know?

Several reviewers have described Saint James 7 Year as behaving more like a Cognac than a traditional Caribbean rum, precisely because of the pronounced dried fruit and rancio character from the cask ageing.

  • Square bottle of straw-coloured rum with simple Saint James logo
    Item no.: 22227865379-10192

Straw yellow, light and carrying the freshness found only in rum pressed from pure cane juice – Saint James has made it this way since 1765.

    Expert description

Saint James Straw Pale Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, briefly matured in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Straw Pale ("Paille" in French) is named after the straw-yellow colour the rum takes on after around two months in oak casks – short enough to preserve the sugarcane's fresh, grassy character, but long enough to add a hint of vanilla and spice. The Saint James distillery in Sainte-Marie is one of the oldest rhum agricole producers on Martinique and has kept its original name unbroken since its founding.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Round, refined and delicate with well-developed notes of dried fruit, honey and liquorice, combined with vanilla and a light touch of wood.

    Palate

Well balanced with woody tones and a pleasant, lingering aroma, where apple and honey continue from the nose alongside a fresh, grassy agricole character.

    Finish

Light and short with a fresh, grassy impression.
