Rhum JM Rum

At the foot of the active volcano Mont Pelée grows the sugarcane that becomes Rhum JM. Volcanic soil, sea breeze and cloud cover create a terroir no other part of Martinique can match. This is rum with geology as co-creator.

About Rhum JM Rum

Rhum JM is a rhum agricole from Martinique, made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, on a site that once housed a sugar refinery. For the newcomer it's a fresh, grassy and aromatic style of rum, quite far from the sweet, dark rum many are familiar with; for the terroir enthusiast, Rhum JM is one of the clearest examples of how volcanic soil, humidity and sea breeze can be tasted directly in the glass.

History & Background

Jean-Marie Martin bought the property at the foot of Mont Pelée in 1845 and decided to phase out the existing sugar refinery in favour of rum production, a decision that laid the foundation for Rhum JM. The location beside the active volcano proved to be a decisive asset rather than a risk, as the volcanic soil, the humidity from the cloud cover and the cooling sea breeze give the sugarcane a truly distinctive quality. The distillery has since kept its own ageing warehouses, where the rum matures in ex-bourbon, cognac, calvados and armagnac casks, often given a "rechar" (recharring), using high-proof rum as the igniting agent.

Production & Style

The rum is distilled as rhum agricole from fresh cane juice from volcanic fields, giving a fresh, herbaceous, and mineral profile.

Signature Style

Fresh, Mineral, Herbaceous
The flavor offers a distinct, grassy freshness with mineral depth from the volcanic soil.
