Compagnie des Indes Rum

Compagnie des Indes is the French independent bottler, named after the historic East and West India trading companies that once shipped rum home to Europe. Today the house seeks out the world's finest casks itself, from Florida to Fiji.

  • Bottle of Compagnie des Indes Dillon 2002/2015 13 Year rhum agricole
    Item no.: 22227865416-321

Only 322 bottles came out of this cask from the Dillon distillery in Martinique. Distilled in 2002, bottled 13 years later in 2015.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Dillon 2002/2015 13 Year Martinique Single Cask is a Rhum Agricole from Martinique, distilled from cane juice and matured for 13 years in a single French oak cask, bottled at 44%.

The rhum comes from the Dillon distillery in Martinique, one of the island's classic producers of Rhum Agricole, distilling directly from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses. Compagnie des Indes sourced this cask and bottled it as a single cask, without added colour or sweetening, offering a pure look at the distillate's clean, grassy and spiced character after 13 years in French oak.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Crisp and clean, with dried apricot, vanilla, black pepper and a grassy base.

    Palate

Spiced and herbal, with caramel, redcurrant and a hint of anise.

    Finish

Dark spices with a hint of florals and a light, herbal sweetness.

  • Compagnie des Indes Secrete Panama 13 Year single cask rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-19711

Panama with no name, but with clear character. Another "Secrete" release from Compagnie des Indes, where the anonymous distillery is compensated by a rum that speaks for itself after 13 years in cask.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes 2004/2017 Secrete 13 Year is a Panama Rum from a single cask, distilled in 2004, bottled in 2017 at 56.9%.

The rum is column-distilled from molasses at an undisclosed Panamanian distillery and has since spent 13 years in cask, predominantly in the tropical climate with a smaller share of continental ageing, before being bottled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes. Panama is known for a lighter, more delicate rum style than its neighbours, which this bottling confirms with its relatively bright, yet complex profile.

The long ageing period has given the rum a depth that balances the wood's spice with a fresh, almost salted caramel character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Caramel, sweet spices and vanilla, with a hint of coffee, toffee and salted caramel butter along with a touch of citrus fruit.

    Palate

Soft and velvety with a lush texture, perfectly balanced with well-integrated wood.

    Finish

Medium length, with salted caramel and a light, toasted wood note.

Trinidad's only distillery, T.D.L., has a character so recognisable that rum connoisseurs can spot it blind. Compagnie des Indes lets it speak entirely for itself here after 13 years in cask.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes 2005/2018 T.D.L. 13 Year is a Trinidad Rum from a single cask, distilled in 2005, bottled in July 2018 at 45%.

The rum comes from Trinidad Distillers Limited, often abbreviated T.D.L., the only operating distillery on Trinidad and therefore the mandatory source for any Trinidad rum. After distillation, the rum spent 13 years in cask in the Caribbean, before being selected and bottled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes with no added colour or sweetness.

T.D.L.'s rum is known for a distinct, medicinal, menthol-like character that makes it easily recognisable among connoisseurs, and which this bottling shows in a mature, well-developed form after over a decade of ageing.

  • Compagnie des Indes Secrete Jamaica 9 Year single cask rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-19709

A cask whose origin remains a secret. Compagnie des Indes chose to call this Jamaican rum "Secrete" because the distillery behind it doesn't want to be named, but the flavour speaks its own, unmistakable language.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes 2007/2017 Secrete 9 Year is a Jamaica Rum from a single cask, distilled in 2007, bottled in 2017 at 54.1%.

The rum is bottled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes, founded in 2014 by Florent Beuchet with the aim of showcasing rum's diversity through authentic, characterful single casks from around the world. This Jamaican edition comes from a cask marked "Secrete", as the distillery behind it is undisclosed, a practice several Jamaican distilleries use to protect their identity from competitors. The rum is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour or sugar, from an outturn of 238 bottles.

The typical Jamaican "funky" character, with its pronounced ester profile, is clear in this rum, where tropical cask ageing has produced a powerful, fruity intensity.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Unmistakably Jamaican with banana, molasses and canned pineapple, complemented by a light, rubbery note.

    Palate

Lime peel and tropical fruit open, followed by a light touch of oak, vanilla syrup and almond.

Full, fruity and powerful with a long finish and low perceived sweetness.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes 8 Year West Indies is a Blended Rum composed of distillates from Guyana, Panama, Barbados and the Dominican Republic, bottled at 40%.

The blend is assembled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes, without additives, bringing together rum from four very different Caribbean traditions in a single bottle. A cannonball of rum, forced through peated whisky casks for half a year, this is not a random title but a very precise description of what awaits in the glass.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 6 is a Blended Rum composed of matured distillates from Nicaragua and Panama, finished for 6 months in ex-peated Islay whisky casks and bottled at 46%.

The blend is released by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes as a limited edition, bottled in 2018. The Central American rum base provides a round, fruity foundation, which is then given a pronounced smoky layer from the previously peated Islay whisky casks, a combination unusual even within Compagnie des Indes' experimental Boulet de Canon series.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Exotic and fruity, with spices such as pepper and curry, finishing with a subtle smoky tone.

Cannonball is the name of this series from the French bottling house, and with a 12-month finish in peated Islay Whisky casks, edition number 8 fully lives up to the name's power.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 8 Spiced Panama Rom is a Panama & Nicaragua Rum, a blend mostly 3-5 years old with a touch of 8-year-old rum, bottled at 46%.

The Boulet de Canon series from French bottler Compagnie des Indes is characterised by whisky-cask finishing, and number 8 in the line spends 12 months in casks that previously held peated Islay Whisky. This gives this South American rum an unusual smoky, vegetal character, more reminiscent of an autumn walk through the forest than a classic Caribbean rum.

The result is a full-bodied, complex rum where smoke and vegetal notes meet classic rum sweetness in an unusual combination.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fruity and smoky with vegetal aromas, moss on tree trunks and the scent of a wood-burning stove.

    Palate

Vegetal with thyme, cress and rooty notes, supported by coffee grounds and a pronounced bitterness.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum is a Blended Rum from Jamaica, at least 5 years old and bottled at 46%.

The rum is assembled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes from several Jamaican rums, all at least 5 years old. What sets Oktoberum apart is the extra maturation the blend undergoes: first five years in casks that previously held Macvin and Vin Jaune, then further maturation in whisky casks, and finally a period in beer casks. The three shifting cask types give the rum a golden, slightly hazy appearance and a character that is harder to pin down than most standard expressions from the island.

    Tasting notes

About Compagnie des Indes

Compagnie des Indes doesn't own a distillery of its own but acts as an independent bottler, sourcing and distributing rum from distilleries around the world, much like the independent bottlers known from the whisky world. Founder Florent Beuchet has built a reputation for finding extraordinary single casks, many sold exclusively in markets like Denmark, making the house something close to a cult favorite among rum collectors.

History & Background

The company was founded by Frenchman Florent Beuchet, who named it after the historic East and West India companies that traded exclusive goods, including rum, back to Europe from the colonies. Since its founding, Compagnie des Indes has expanded its network to distilleries across the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Pacific islands such as Fiji and Indonesia.

Production & Style

The rum is bought as finished distillate from each individual distillery and either bottled as single cask or blended into light, transparent blends, always disclosing origin country and distillation method. Many of the Danish exclusive releases come from specially selected casks Compagnie des Indes has itself sourced and further matured.

Signature Style

Clean, Distillery-Specific, Versatile
The flavor varies significantly from release to release, but a shared trait is a clean, distillery-driven character that lets the original distillate speak for itself.
