Eighteen years in a barrel on a small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean - only 305 bottles of this French single cask rum ever left the warehouse.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes 2004/2022 Savanna 18 Year is a French Single Cask Rum from the Savanna distillery on Réunion, matured in oak casks and bottled at 52.9%.

The rum was distilled in April 2004 and bottled in September 2022 by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes, founded by Florent Beuchet with inspiration from the old East India trading companies. The company seeks out single casks from across the rum world and bottles them without added sugar, colouring or artificial smoothing, letting each cask show its own unfiltered character.

The cask comes from the Savanna distillery at Bois Rouge on Réunion, a French island east of Madagascar, where both molasses rum and agricole rum from fresh cane juice are distilled. This release is non-chill filtered and has no added colouring, and only 305 bottles were drawn from the cask.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe tropical fruit and lightly waxed wood, with a hint of spice from the 18 years of maturation.

    Palate

Powerful and full-bodied with sweet fruit, caramelised wood sugar and a warm, alcohol-driven core.

    Finish

Long, dry and spicy with a lingering note of toasted wood.
