Some rums are made to resemble something familiar. Oktoberum is made to surprise, a Jamaican rum sent through three completely unexpected cask types.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum is a Blended Rum from Jamaica, at least 5 years old and bottled at 46%.

The rum is assembled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes from several Jamaican rums, all at least 5 years old. What sets Oktoberum apart is the extra maturation the blend undergoes: first five years in casks that previously held Macvin and Vin Jaune, then further maturation in whisky casks, and finally a period in beer casks. The three shifting cask types give the rum a golden, slightly hazy appearance and a character that is harder to pin down than most standard expressions from the island.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pear and honey, alongside a lightly smoky, empyreumatic note from the unusual casks.

    Palate

Lively and powerful, with a clear Jamaican ester character and a light smoky undertone.

    Finish

Lingering, with a hint of smoke and honey that fades slowly.

    Did you know?

Oktoberum is one of the few rums in the world matured in casks from three completely different drink traditions in a row, Macvin and Vin Jaune from the Jura region of France, whisky, and finally beer, making it one of Compagnie des Indes' most experimental releases.

Frequently asked questions about Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum

What is Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum?

It is a Blended Rum from Jamaica, at least 5 years old, finished across three shifting cask types and bottled at 46%.

What does Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum taste like?

Lively and powerful, with pear, honey and a light smoky undertone, plus a clear Jamaican ester character underneath.

    Why is it called Oktoberum?

The name refers to its distinctive, experimental production process, in which the rum is sent through three different cask types in succession, a method that differs markedly from Compagnie des Indes' more classic single cask releases.

What casks is Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum matured in?

The rum first matures in casks from Macvin and Vin Jaune, two French drinks from the Jura region, then in whisky casks, and finally in beer casks.

Why is the colour of Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum slightly hazy?

The golden, slightly hazy colour comes from the unusual cask types the rum has rested in, which differ from the more transparent bourbon and sherry casks normally used for rum.

Is Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum suited for rum enthusiasts?

Yes, the experimental cask profile and three shifting cask types make it an obvious choice for those already familiar with classic Jamaican rums and looking for something more unconventional.
