Oban Whisky

Oban was founded in 1794, long before the town around it even existed - today the distillery sits wedged right in the town centre, almost embraced by a cliff face. Its tiny production capacity has always limited how much Oban can make, making it one of Diageo's scarcest Classic Malts. It's a whisky shaped as much by lack of space as by sea and malt.

The salt wind of Scotland's west coast meets orchard sweetness in this year's release from one of Scotland's smallest and most photographed distilleries.

    Expert Review

Oban Special Release 2024 Coastel Orchard 10 år Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70 cl 58% is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American oak, finished in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 58% ABV.

The name Coastal Orchard captures the link between sea and orchard that defines this Oban Special Release. The whisky is matured in American oak and finished in selected Oloroso sherry casks, layering orchard-fruit sweetness over the distillery's classic maritime character.

Oban Distillery sits wedged between the cliffs of the small harbour town that shares its name, on Scotland's west coast, and is one of the country's smallest and oldest distilleries still in operation. Its compact size means small batches and a close relationship between the copper stills and the salty sea air that drifts through the warehouse doors.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers ripe apples and pears, underpinned by a light salty breeze and a hint of honey from the sherry casks.

    Palate

The palate is full and oily, with candied citrus peel, dried apricot and a warm spiciness from the high strength.

    Finish

The finish is long, with lingering sea salt and a final hint of fruit sweetness from the sherry casks.

About Oban Whisky

Oban is a Scottish distillery on Scotland's west coast, located in the middle of the town of the same name, one of the smallest and oldest distilleries in the country. For a newcomer, it's a balanced, gently maritime, approachable route into Highland whisky; for the connoisseur, Oban's low output is exactly the point - its tiny capacity means the distillery has never been able to scale up, keeping both demand and prices consistently high.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson, long before the modern town of Oban had even taken shape around it. The town gradually grew up around the distillery, which today sits so tightly hemmed in by buildings that there has never been room to meaningfully expand production. Over the years several owners have tried to modernise the site, but its physical confinement has remained part of Oban's identity, and today it stands as one of Diageo's six original Classic Malts.

Production & Style

The whisky is distilled at one of Scotland's smallest distilleries, giving a craft-driven, concentrated production.

Signature Style

Maritime, Smoky, Rich
The flavor offers a rich character with a hint of smoke and a distinct maritime undertone.
