Poli Liqueur

Poli in the northern Italian region of Veneto has, since 1898, refined the art of distilling liqueur, from limoncello to sambuca. The Poli family has made craftsmanship, quality and tradition its common thread across several generations. It's Italian liqueur craft in its most authentic form.

There's something reassuring about a bottle that has followed the same recipe since 1898. Poli Elisir Prugna is one of the liqueurs the Poli family in Schiavon has never touched – because it was already perfect.

    Expert's description

Poli Elisir Prugna is an Italian plum liqueur from Poli Distillerie, made from pure plum juice of the Prunus domestica variety, at 40% alcohol.

Poli Distillerie was founded in 1898 by GioBatto Poli in the small town of Schiavon in Veneto, and is today run by the fourth generation – siblings Jacopo, Gianpaolo, Barbara, and Andrea Poli. Liqueurs have been part of the production from the very start, and on the old 1930 letterhead, "Fabbrica liquori" actually appeared before "Distilleria Acquavite".

Elisir Prugna's story starts elsewhere. It was originally called Sliwovitz di Prugna, a dry plum liqueur. But in 1938, the term Sliwovitz became reserved for the dry plum distillates of Eastern Europe, and the Poli family had to find a new name for their own, sweeter version. Elisir Prugna was born – made by letting pure plum juice steep in alcohol, without distilling the fruit itself.

The result is a liqueur with a character somewhere between fruit, almond, and baked goods – a style deeply rooted in the traditions of the Vicenza area.

    Taste

The aroma offers ripe plums, roasted almonds, and a hint of amaretto biscuit – warm and inviting, like a tray of cookies fresh from the oven. The taste is sweet without becoming cloying, with a distinct plum character and the characteristic touch of amaretto and bitter almond that Elisir Prugna is known for. The finish is soft and lingering, where almond and ripe fruit follow each other into a round, mellow close.

Poli Distillerie still sticks to the original recipe for Elisir Prugna, and at the distillery the liqueur is used, among other things, in the cocktail "Holy Prugna", where it's mixed with scotch whisky, ice, and a cherry garnish – a small reminder of just how versatile an old Italian family's liqueur recipe can be.

A truck rolled into Schiavon in 1948, and the whole village turned out to see it. Children took turns riding on the back, the adults toasted with a powerful bitter, and the name of both the truck and the bottle has stuck ever since.

    Expert description

Poli Super Taurus Bitter Veneto is an Italian Liqueur at 25% from Poli Distillerie in Schiavon, Veneto, made through a natural infusion of citrus peel, bittering herbs and spices in alcohol.

The bitter was named after a Super Taurus truck that arrived at the distillery in 1948, one of the first vehicles of its kind seen in the area — an event that drew the whole village. The powerful, robust bitter was made to match the strength of its namesake, and it was enjoyed as a celebration of Italy's post-war economic recovery.

The production still follows the same method: citrus peel, gentian, liquorice root and other bittering botanical extracts are slowly steeped in alcohol until the characteristic bittersweet profile is reached.

About Poli Liqueur

Poli is an Italian family-owned distillery founded in 1898 in the northern part of Veneto. Across its many generations the distillery has specialized in producing some of Italy's finest liqueurs and distillates, with a focus on craftsmanship, quality and, not least, tradition. The distillery's range includes limoncello, gin, vermouth, sambuca, grappa and liqueur, and for newcomers it's the breadth of the range that makes Poli an obvious entry point into Italian liqueur culture, while connoisseurs highlight the consistent quality across the whole selection.

History & Background

The Poli distillery was founded in 1898 by Jacopo Poli in Bassano del Grappa, with grappa as its original focus, though the range has since expanded considerably to include a wide variety of liqueurs and distillates. Across generations the family has held to the artisanal principle of distilling in small batches with careful quality control. Today the house is led by Jacopo Poli Jr., who carries the tradition forward with respect for the original recipes while continually renewing the range.

Production & Style

The liqueurs are often made with a base of grappa or neutral spirit, flavored with herbs, fruit, or spices according to traditional methods.

Signature Style

Aromatic, Spiced, Intense
The flavor varies by edition, but a common thread is an aromatic, Italian character with a clear distillate backbone.
