Chartreuse Liqueur

A monastic herbal liqueur from 1737, whose recipe of 130 plants is known to only two monks at a time and has never been written down in full. The recipe was handed to the Carthusian monks all the way back in 1605 by an unknown sender, and secrecy has been just as central as the flavor ever since. Only in Voiron is it distilled today, in yellow or green form.

    Item no.: 059763-615-707

The Chartreuse monastery is famous the world over for its green and yellow liqueur, but that is far from the only thing on the monks' shelf. Gentiane des Pères Chartreux is the herbal-bitter younger sibling that never got the same fame – but deserves it.

    Expert's Description

Gentiane des Pères Chartreux is a French herbal liqueur at 22.7% ABV - a herbal aperitif made with gentian root and citrus distillates, released under the Chartreuse Diffusion (Pères Chartreux) brand.

The Carthusian monks do not only make the well-known green and yellow expressions of Chartreuse liqueur. This aperitif liqueur is built on bitter gentian root, traditionally used in French and Italian aperitifs, with citrus distillates added for a fresher character.

    Taste

The nose is herbal and lightly bitter with a touch of citrus, and the palate follows with a dry, bitter gentian character balanced by a fresh citrus note. The finish is long and lightly bitter.

130 herbs, a secret recipe from 1764 and the Carthusian monks' silence - Chartreuse Élixir Végétal is not a liqueur for cocktails, but a living piece of cultural history in miniature format.

    Ekspertens beskrivelse

Chartreuse Élixir Végétal is a French herbal elixir from the Chartreuse order, made according to the original 1764 recipe "Elixir of long life", bottled at 69% ABV in a 10 cl miniature.

The elixir is one of the most iconic and historic drinks from the Chartreuse order and differs from the more familiar green and yellow Chartreuse liqueurs by being a concentrated elixir with a strong herbal taste and medicinal origin. It was first made in 1764 by Carthusian monks in France according to a secret recipe with around 130 different herbs, plants and spices - a recipe known to only three monks at a time. The elixir is not a classic cocktail ingredient, but a powerful herbal drink traditionally used as medicine or a fortifying tonic.

    Smag

The aroma is very herbal with notes of mint, thyme, rosemary, aniseed and a balsamic freshness. The taste is extremely concentrated and complex, with layers of bitter and sweet herbs and spices and a powerful green character that can seem both medicinal and spiritual in expression, while the finish is long, warm and spicy with a lingering herbal intensity.

An extremely important detail in the production of Chartreuse is that only three monks are allowed to know about the unique opskrift.
