Luxardo Sambuca

In Dalmatia, Giacomo Luxardo created his first maraschino liqueur from local Marasca cherries in 1821, a recipe that has since survived war, exile and rebuilding. Today Luxardo remains fully family-owned, led by the sixth generation, making it one of the rare spirits houses in the world no corporation has ever touched. Behind every bottle lies two centuries of the same uncompromising approach to Italian craftsmanship.

About Luxardo Liqueur

Luxardo is one of Italy's most iconic and traditional liqueur houses, a family-owned company that since 1821 has set the standard for authentic, craft-driven spirits. For the newcomer, Luxardo Sambuca is an accessible, aniseed-forward entry into Italian liqueur culture; for the connoisseur, the Luxardo name is synonymous with quality across the entire bartending world, where their cocktail cherries and Maraschino have become standard ingredients in classic cocktails like the Aviation and the Last Word, and where the still fully family-owned house represents a rare authenticity in an industry dominated by major conglomerates.

History & Background

Girolamo Luxardo and his wife Maria Canevari settled in Zara in 1817, and it was Maria who began refining "rosolio maraschino" - a liqueur that had been made in Dalmatian convents since medieval times from special marasca cherries. The quality was so high that Girolamo founded the Luxardo distillery in 1821 to produce her recipe commercially, and the Austrian Emperor later honoured the product as being "of superior quality". During WWII, the original factory in Zara was almost completely destroyed, but a fourth-generation survivor, Giorgio Luxardo, fled to Italy carrying a cherry sapling and rebuilt the company in Torreglia in 1946.

Production & Style

The Maraschino liqueur is still produced today according to Maria Canevari's original 1821 recipe, based on marasca cherries and their pits.

Signature Style

Cherry-Driven, Dry, Complex
The flavour offers a dry, slightly bitter cherry character with almond-like notes from the cherry pits.
