Big Peat Christmas

The peated Christmas gift from one of Islay's best-loved blended malts. Big Peat Christmas Edition is the annual holiday release of Big Peat from the family-owned bottler Douglas Laing & Co., founded in Glasgow in 1948. Each release is limited in number and hunted down every year by peated whisky collectors worldwide.

    Item no.: 22227865468-2021

The colour is paler than you would guess, and the nose recalls soot on the inside of a wood burner's glass. The eleventh time Douglas Laing sent Big Peat on his Christmas holiday — and still no sign of him settling down.

    The expert's description

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2021 is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 52.8 % cask strength.

It is the eleventh edition in Douglas Laing's Christmas series, assembled from single malts from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and Port Ellen. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The Christmas release is bottled every year at cask strength and with its own composition, and the 2021 vintage is among the paler in colour — a sign that bourbon leaning casks dominate the vatting.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soot and stove glass, dried seaweed and a sharp medicinal edge. Under the smoke sit lemon, vanilla and a light sweetness.

    Palate

High-octane peat smoke with sea salt, pepper and toasted barley. The 52.8 % gives a firm grip, and a dry, almost chalky minerality runs through the middle.

    Finish

Long and dry with ash, salt and a hint of vanilla at the end.

About Big Peat Christmas

Big Peat Christmas Edition is the annual holiday release of Douglas Laing's popular Big Peat, a blended malt whisky built around Islay's peated distilleries. For newcomers, Big Peat is a natural way into peated whisky, since it blends several Islay distilleries into one bottle and offers a broad impression of the island's smoky style all at once, while for collectors it's the Christmas release itself that matters: an annual, limited bottling, often at a higher strength, that rarely stays available for long.

The Christmas edition is released in limited quantities each year and has attained cult status among peated whisky collectors.

History & Background

Big Peat was launched in 2009 by the independent, family-owned bottler Douglas Laing & Co., founded in Glasgow in 1948 and still run by the same family today. The blended malt brings together whisky from several of Islay's peated distilleries under one label, accompanied by the distinctive bearded character on the bottle that has become one of the whisky world's most recognisable images. The Christmas edition has been a recurring part of the range for a number of years and has attained cult status among collectors, precisely because, like the rest of the Big Peat family, it's released in limited quantities and often sells out quickly.

Production & Style

The whisky blends malt from several Islay distilleries, often at a higher strength than the standard release.

Signature Style

Peated, Smoky, Intense
The whisky offers a peated, smoky character with an intense, lingering finish.
