Glenlossie Whisky

Hardly anyone has heard of Glenlossie, and that's rather the point - for 150 years the distillery has supplied its light, elegant malt to blends like Haig without ever chasing the spotlight itself. But behind the low profile lies one of Speyside's best-kept, least-told stories.

  • Bottle of Glenlossie Flora & Fauna Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865471-303

South of Elgin, where Speyside flattens out toward the coast, sits a distillery few outside the trade have ever heard of. Glenlossie has spent decades quietly propping up blends like Haig's and Dimple – Flora & Fauna is one of the rare chances to meet it on its own.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 10 Year Old Flora & Fauna Single Speyside Malt Whisky is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The bottle belongs to the Flora & Fauna series, launched in 1992 by the then United Distillers (today Diageo, the world's largest spirits company). The original series comprised 26 different single malts, chosen to show the breadth of Scotland's whisky regions – most bottled at 43%, a handful at cask strength, and some presented in wooden cases.

Glenlossie sits just south of Elgin alongside several other distilleries most drinkers have never heard of, since their output mainly feeds blends. Glenlossie is a well-known component of Haig's and Dimple, and it rarely appears on a label by itself.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Cornflakes and freshly cut vanilla arrive first, quietly rather than loudly – Glenlossie isn't a whisky that shouts. Behind the pale, cereal sweetness sits a hint of ripe orchard fruit, held back almost politely.

    Palate

Ginger and toasted bread define the palate, carried on a soft, creamy body. The sweetness stays restrained and malty rather than fruity, and the texture is round without turning heavy.

    Finish

White pepper adds a small spark to an otherwise quiet finish – short, dry and precise, like a parting remark from a whisky that would rather do its work inside a blend than stand alone on a shelf.

    Item no.: 22227865478-78963

Lady of the Glen sticks to one simple rule: casks from silent distilleries, or rare, tightly limited parcels. This Glenlossie is another reason the Scottish bottler has built such a following among collectors in recent years.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 10 Year Old Lady of the Glen is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at full cask strength, 56.6%.

Distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2023 by the independent bottler Lady of the Glen, run by Hannah Whisky Merchants, the whisky comes from a single cask, No. 5308, a refill hogshead finished in an ex ruby port cask. Lady of the Glen always bottles single cask, non-chill filtered and with no added colour, so what lands in the glass is the whisky exactly as the cask left it.

Glenlossie rarely appears as a standalone single malt, since most of its output feeds blends such as Haig's and Dimple – every independent Glenlossie release is a small look behind that curtain.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe red berries and a touch of port-wine sweetness sit over Glenlossie's cereal base. There's a hint of dried apricot and a light, spiced warmth from the high strength.

    Palate

Full and powerful, with red-wine berries, caramel and a clear cask-strength bite. The malt still comes through, carried by a faintly sweet, wine-toned note from the port cask.

    Finish

Long and warm, with lingering berry and spice notes that slowly settle into a dry, faintly tannic finish.

  • Bottle of Glenlossie Berry Bros 23 Year Old Speyside Single Malt whisky
    Item no.: 22227865449-7042

Twenty-three years is a long time to sit still in a Scottish warehouse – long enough for a barely-known Speyside malt like Glenlossie to become something quite different from where it started. Berry Bros & Rudd has captured exactly that moment.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 1992/2016 Berry Bros 23 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottled at 46%.

Distilled in 1992, the whisky was sourced by Berry Bros & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant, which has traded rare casks under the Berry's Own Selection label since its founding in 1698. This Glenlossie comes from a single cask, No. 3473, and wears its 23 years openly – both in colour and in its mature, rounded character.

Glenlossie rarely reaches the world as a standalone single malt, since most of its output goes into blends. A release this old from an independent bottler is therefore a rare chance to meet the distillery at its most mature.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Waxy honey and dried apricot sit over a lightly nutty malt. Given time in the glass, a faint soapy, floral note emerges too, typical of older Speyside malts.

    Palate

Soft and round, with toffee, lightly toasted almonds and a hint of old oak polish. The 23 years have smoothed every edge, without the whisky losing its cereal core.

    Finish

Dry and faintly tannic, with a lingering honeyed note and a distant whisper of spiced wood.

    Item no.: 22227865391-8846-22

For almost four decades, Signatory Vintage has made a living finding the casks the big names never wanted to bottle themselves. This 2006 Glenlossie is another reason enthusiasts keep an eye on their releases.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 2006/2020 Signatory Vintage 13 Year Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at cask strength, 58.5%.

Distilled on 27 November 2006 and bottled on 9 March 2020 by the independent bottler Signatory Vintage, one of Scotland's oldest and most prolific bottlers, this whisky comes from two bourbon casks, No. 3303 and 3304, yielding a small outturn of 335 bottles.

Signatory sources casks from distilleries across Scotland and bottles them under its own name – often from distilleries like Glenlossie, which rarely turns up as a standalone single malt elsewhere.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh barley malt and vanilla custard meet a lightly tart fruitiness, like citrus peel. The bourbon cask lends a clear sweetness without taking over.

    Palate

Powerful and warm, with caramelised sugar, ripe pear and a peppery spice from the high strength. The malt stays clear throughout.

    Finish

Long, dry and lightly spiced, with a lingering note of vanilla foam and a touch of oak.

Two casks from the same distillate, bottled just a year apart – a rare chance to see how a single bourbon barrel can pull a whisky in its own direction. This is one half of that story.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 2006/2021 Signatory 14 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottled at cask strength, 58.6%.

Distilled on 27 November 2006 and bottled on 22 April 2021 by Signatory, from two bourbon barrels, Cask No. 3291 and 3302, yielding 388 bottles – with no added colour and no chill filtration, so the colour is exactly what the casks gave it.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Pale honey and vanilla custard with a hint of coconut from the bourbon cask. Beneath the sweetness sits a dry, cereal malt and a touch of green apple.

    Palate

Powerful and sweet, with caramel, vanilla sugar and a warm, peppery spice. The bourbon cask's imprint is clear, but it never smothers the malt beneath.

    Finish

Long and dry, with a faintly bitter oak note and a last trace of honey.

Darker caramel and toasted almonds than its younger sister, with a clear scent of warm oak polish and a hint of dried figs.

Nine years is young in Glenlossie's world, but even here you can sense why the distillery is so prized by blenders. Berry Bros & Rudd has captured the fresh, direct side of the whisky before time got to round off anything.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 2007/2017 Berry Bros 9 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottled at 46%.

Distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2017 by Berry Bros & Rudd under the Berry's Own Selection label, from a single cask, No. 10103, at just nine years old this is one of the youngest Glenlossie releases in our range, showing the distillery's clean, cereal character more clearly than the older bottlings.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh barley malt, green apple and a light honeyed sweetness. No obvious cask influence yet – this is clean, young Glenlossie.

    Palate

Crisp and direct, with cereal, pear and a light peppery spice. The texture is lighter than its older siblings, but still with good body.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Creamy vanilla and lightly toasted oak meet a fresh citrus peel. Beneath the pale surface sits a clear malt sweetness.

    Palate

Round and creamy, with malty sweetness, citrus peel and a mild spice from the oak. The lack of filtration gives a noticeably fuller body than many other 12-year-old Speyside malts.

Adelphi has a reputation for bottling only the casks that truly deserve it – with just 177 bottles from this single refill bourbon barrel, this Glenlossie is one of the rarest names in our Scottish range.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 2011/2025 Adelphi Selection 13 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at cask strength, 59.9%.

Distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2025 by Adelphi Selection, from a refill bourbon barrel, cask number 35429. The long years in cask have given the whisky an elegant oak imprint and a soft, rich character, without losing its complexity.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Soft oak and caramel meet a light sweetness of honey and ripe apple. The high strength gives a clear, but not sharp, spice.

    Palate

Rich and full, with toffee, roasted nuts and a warm, peppery spice. The 13 years in cask have added good depth without taking over.

    Finish

Long and warm, with lingering oak and a last hint of honeyed sweetness.

    Item no.: 059763-615-691

  • Bottle of Glenlossie-Glenlivet Cadenhead's Speyside Single Malt whisky
    Item no.: 22225390-7559

Glenlossie is one of Speyside's quiet names. Most of what it distils disappears into blends and is never seen as single malt. So when an independent bottler like Cadenhead's chooses to put the name on the label, it's a rare chance to meet the distillery on its own terms – no sherry cask masking the character.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie-Glenlivet 2013/2025 Cadenhead's Original Collection 12 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46%.

The whisky is a release from Cadenhead's Original Collection, Scotland's oldest independent bottler, with roots dating back to 1842. It has spent twelve years in bourbon hogsheads – the slightly larger ex-bourbon casks – exactly the cask type that lets Glenlossie's pale, green and lightly bakery-toned style speak for itself. No finish, no detours. Just distillery and oak.

The name "Glenlossie-Glenlivet" is a leftover from an era when a string of Speyside distilleries appended "-Glenlivet" to borrow some shine from the famous name. Today it's mostly a nerdy nod to history.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Lemongrass and fresh herbs first, then a dusting of sherbet and soft, poached pears. Pale and lightly perfumed.

    Palate

Shortbread and crisp gooseberries sit atop a core of caramelised brown sugar. Creamy without turning heavy.

    Finish

Vanilla pod and icing sugar slide into crème brûlée and a nutty hint of pistachio. Lingers, soft and sweet.

Glenlossie actually shares its site and staff with neighbouring distillery Mannochmore – the two sit side by side south of Elgin, and almost everything from here ends up in blends, which is exactly why it's so rare to see the name alone on a bottle.

About Glenlossie Whisky

Glenlossie is a distillery that has never hunted for fame - which is exactly what makes it interesting for whisky lövers wanting to go deeper than the well-known names. Its light, floral style makes it an easy malt for beginners to first encounter inside a blend, while its rare independently bottled single malts are a find for collectors exploring Speyside's lesser-known corners. The distillery shares its site with a substantial dark grains plant that turns spent by-products into cattle feed - a reminder that whisky production has historically never stood entirely alone.

History & Background

Glenlossie was founded in 1876 by John Duff and Co, a company John Duff formed with H. Mackay, Charles Shirres, Alexander Grigor Allan and George Thomson after his time managing the Glendronach distillery. It sits in the village of Thomshill, south of Elgin. Twenty years later, Mackay took over as manager when Duff left to found Longmorn. In 1919, Distillers Company Ltd acquired the distillery, which later passed to Scottish Malt Distillers - today part of Diageo, the world's largest spirits producer.

Production & Style

Glenlossie distils on six copper stills, a number reached in 1962 when production was expanded. The stills are fitted with special copper purifiers that give the spirit its characteristically light, clean profile by returning heavier vapours back to the still. The distillery converted from steam to electric power during the 1960s and today has a total annual capacity of 2.14 million litres, mostly destined for Diageo's blends.

Signature Style

Light, Floral, Elegant
Fresh fruit, grass and a touch of nuts give a clean, restrained profile built to play well with other malts rather than dominate them.
