Etsu Hokkaido Gin

Etsu comes from the Asahikawa distillery on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, where the name means 'enjoyment' – a philosophy running through the gin's entire character. Bitter orange peel gives the gin a distinct Asian twist on the classic London Dry style, shaped by Hokkaido's cold, clean climate. It's Japanese precision meeting the stillness of a northern winter landscape.

    Item no.: 2222786539-101121

Etsu means "pleasure" in Japanese, and the gin lives up to the name. It is distilled on the island of Hokkaido with water from the Taisetsu Mountains and botanicals rarely found in a gin bottle west of Japan.

    Expert's description

Etsu Gin is a Japanese Gin distilled at the Asahikawa Distillery on Hokkaido and bottled at 43%.

Etsu was one of the first Japanese craft gins on the market, built on a secret recipe combining gyokuro green tea, sanshō pepper, bitter green orange peel, coriander, liquorice, angelica root, yuzu and Hokkaido-grown juniper.

The botanicals macerate for more than 24 hours in neutral sugarcane spirit before the gin is distilled in a traditional swan-neck copper still and diluted from 83% down to 43% with water from the Taisetsu Mountains.

The gin is then filtered through charcoal for extra purity, giving it its soft, round and floral character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is soft and floral with green tea and yuzu, spiced with a light peppery note from sanshō pepper.

    Palate

The palate is round and delicate with juniper in the background, backed by fresh yuzu citrus and a subtle herbal bitterness from green tea.

    Finish

The finish is soft and lightly spiced, with a last trace of sanshō pepper and citrus.

    Item no.: 2222786539-10179

Etsu means pleasure in Japanese, a fitting name for a gin distilled with water from the Taisetsu mountains and filtered through bamboo charcoal on the island of Hokkaido.

    Expert's description

Etsu Hokkaido Gin is a Japanese gin distilled at the Asahikawa distillery and bottled at 43%.

The gin is built on at least eight botanicals, including juniper, yuzu, green bitter orange peel, coriander seed, liquorice, green tea leaf, angelica root, sansho pepper and cherry blossom.

The botanicals are macerated for 22 hours in alcohol before being distilled in a traditional copper alembic still, and the gin is then reduced with pure water from the Taisetsu mountains.

The Japanese water is filtered through bamboo charcoal, contributing to an exceptional purity, while sansho pepper and yuzu give the gin its distinctive Japanese character.

About Etsu Hokkaido Gin

Hokkaido's harsh climate and pristine nature are central to Etsu's identity, and the distillery emphasises local, northern Japanese ingredients rather than the more southern, tropical botanicals often seen in Japanese gin.

History & Background

The Asahikawa distillery sits on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, known for cold winters and a different, more rugged nature than the rest of the country, which has shaped the distillery's choice of botanicals and style.

Production & Style

Bitter orange peel, coriander and angelica are distilled alongside juniper, a combination that gives the gin a bitter-spiced edge rather than the floral character often found in Japanese gin from more southern distilleries.

Signature Style

Bitter, Spiced, Nordic-Japanese
Bitter citrus peel meets spiced coriander and angelica in a robust, northern Japanese style that stands apart from the more floral southern Japanese gins.
