AH Riise Bitter

At a pharmacy on St. Thomas in 1838, Albert Heinrich Riise mixed herbs and spices into his own rum-based recipe. That blend became the cornerstone of a Danish spirits house that still carries his name today.

In 1838 a young pharmacist from Aeroeskoebing received a royal privilege to distil spirits on the island of Saint Thomas. His name still lives on in a glass where liquorice and salmiac meet in one short, salty-sweet burst.

    Expert's description

A.H. Riise Pharmacy 1838 Liquorice Shot is a Danish West Indian liquorice liqueur at 18% ABV, bottled at 70 cl.

The name honours Albert Heinrich Riise, who in June 1838 was appointed pharmacist for the island of Saint Thomas in the Danish West Indies and given sole rights to produce alcohol from his pharmacy. Riise ran his "St. Thomas Apothecary Hall" in Charlotte Amalie from 1838 to 1878, and the shot is a modern tribute to that legacy. The base is premium vodka, blended with English liquorice, liquorice root powder and salmiac, giving a short, intense flavour hit rather than a slow-sipping digestif.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pure, dark liquorice with a hint of salmiac that prickles the nose.

    Taste

Sweet and salty at once, with a clear liquorice core that quickly sharpens from the salmiac.

    Finish

Short and salty, with a light warmth from the vodka carrying the flavour to the last drop.

About AH Riise Bitter

AH Riise Bitter comes from Danish spirits house AH Riise, with roots tracing back to a pharmacy founded on St. Thomas in 1838. For newcomers it's a spicy, herbal bitter with a distinct Caribbean heritage; for collectors it's notable that the bitter is built on the house's own X.O. Reserve Rum, infused with extracts from over 30 different herbs and spices, drawing a direct line from the 19th-century Danish West Indies pharmacy to today's bottle.

History & Background

The name comes from pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise, who in 1838 founded a pharmacy on the island of St. Thomas, then part of the Danish West Indies. Riise began experimenting with herb and spice extracts blended into rum, originally as medicinal remedies, but the recipes evolved over time into the liqueurs and bitters the house later became known for. When Denmark sold the West Indian islands to the US in 1917, AH Riise continued as a brand, carrying the tradition of the Caribbean pharmacy forward in modern form. Today AH Riise is one of the few Danish spirits houses able to trace its history directly back to a physical shop in the Danish West Indies.

Production & Style

The bitter is infused with herbs and spices following a recipe rooted in the house's Caribbean history.
