About Tranquebar Gin

Tranquebar Gin takes its name and inspiration from the former Danish colony of Tranquebar in southeast India, acquired by Denmark in 1620. The gin is built on a private recipe from 1616, created by Dutch merchant Jan de Willum, who combined classic gin with the exotic spices trading ships brought home from Tranquebar.

History & Background

In the 1600s, spices were worth almost their weight in gold, and this was one of the direct reasons Denmark established the colony of Tranquebar in southeast India. Jan de Willum, one of the founders of the Danish East India Company, was inspired by the spices the trade route brought with it, and created his own recipe by weaving them into his homeland's classic gin tradition.

Production & Style

The gin contains nine botanicals - juniper, coriander, orange peel, lemon peel, angelica root, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and Darjeeling tea - all sourced from the Tranquebar region. Production takes place at the Royal Dirkzwager distillery in Schiedam, Holland, founded in 1879.

Signature Style

Spiced, Exotic, Warm
The flavour offers juniper and citrus in classic gin style, layered with cardamom, cinnamon and tea, giving a warm, oriental character.
