Ron Izalco Rum

Ron Izalco takes its name from one of El Salvador's most famous volcanoes, once called the 'Lighthouse of the Pacific' for its constant glowing eruptions. The rum is aged up to 10 years in American oak casks and built to match that same intensity, the calm behind the storm. It's Central America's answer to the great Caribbean rum names.

  • Bottle of Ron Izalco 10 years with golden rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-137

A former Indian athlete left a software career to pursue a passion for Central American rum - the result is Ron Izalco, named after a volcano that for centuries guided sailors home.

    Expert Description

Ron Izalco 10 years is a Blended Rum, assembled from some of Central America's finest aged rums from Nicaragua, Guatemala and Panama, bottled at 43%.

The rum is made by the American house Phenomenal Spirits, founded by Karthik Sudhir, who left a career in software for a passion for rum. The base is sugarcane grown in the volcanic soil around the Izalco volcano in El Salvador, which gives the cane exceptional quality and flavour. All rums in the blend are at least 10 years old before being assembled under the watch of master blender Matt Witzig.

The Izalco volcano, also called the "Lighthouse of the Pacific", stands 1,965 metres tall and from 1770 to 1958 served as a fixed landmark for sailors, who for 188 years could navigate safely to harbour by its glowing crater.

Five extra years in cask compared to its younger sibling makes a noticeable difference - Ron Izalco 15 years Cask Strength is the most mature and concentrated edition in the range.

    Expert Description

Ron Izalco 15 years Cask Strength is a Cask Strength Rum, blended from Central American rums and bottled undiluted at 55.3%.

The rum is inspired by the Izalco volcano in El Salvador, also known as the "Lighthouse of the Pacific" for its role as a natural landmark for sailors from 1770 to 1958. The base is sugarcane grown in the mineral-rich, volcanic soil around the volcano, which Phenomenal Spirits lets mature for at least 15 years before bottling the rum at full cask strength.

The extra years of ageing give this edition a deeper, more complex character than the 10 year editions, with more pronounced wood and spice notes.

It is made from select sugar cane molasses and aged for up to 10 years in American oak casks, producing a deep, complex flavour with notes of tropical fruit, caramel and spice. For the newcomer it's ideal enjoyed neat or as the base of a sophisticated cocktail; for the connoisseur, Ron Izalco is one of the lesser-known but highly regarded Central American rum names, able to compete with the great Caribbean houses on both ageing time and complexity.

History & Background

Ron Izalco is produced in El Salvador and takes its name from the Izalco volcano, which for centuries was known for its almost constant volcanic activity and served as a natural navigation aid for sailors along the Pacific coast, earning it the nickname 'Lighthouse of the Pacific'. By ageing up to 10 years in American oak casks, the producer deliberately positions itself at the more exclusive end of the Central American rum market.
