Makers Mark Whiskey

Maker's Mark is the red wax-dipped bottle everyone recognises without reading the label. Behind that hand-finished seal lies a 1950s decision to drop rye entirely in favour of wheat — a choice that still makes the whiskey unusually soft.

The same wheated bourbon, with no water added — Cask Strength shows Maker's Mark at its rawest.

    Expert description

Maker's Mark Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the same wheated bourbon as the core expression, but bottled directly at cask strength without dilution, 55.45%. Maker's Mark was founded in 1953, when Bill Samuels Sr. bought the old Burks' Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. His wife Margie created the entire brand identity — the name, the square bottle and the hand-dipped red wax seal, still hand-dipped on every bottle today. Bill Samuels wanted to create a softer bourbon than the typical rye-based styles of the day and replaced rye with red winter wheat in the mash bill. The distillery was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1980.

About Maker's Mark Whiskey

Maker's Mark was founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. in Loretto, Kentucky, and stands apart from most bourbons by using soft winter wheat instead of rye in its mash bill, producing a notably softer, sweeter style with notes of caramel and vanilla. The distillery, designated a National Historic Landmark, is famous for its red, hand-dipped wax seal, still applied manually by staff on site, and for rotating its barrels rather than simply letting them sit still during maturation. Collectors take an interest in the older Private Selection releases, while newcomers meet one of the most accessible, softest bourbons on the market.

History & Background

Bill Samuels Sr. reportedly burned his family's old bourbon recipe in his oven and developed a completely new one based on wheat, because he wanted a milder whiskey than the one his ancestors had made since the 1780s. His wife Margie designed the iconic wax seal and the name "Maker's Mark", inspired by her collection of antique pewter marks, where craftsmen stamped their personal signature on their work. The distillery remained family-owned for generations until becoming part of what later became Beam Suntory in 2005, but the production methods and the hand-dipped wax seal remain largely unchanged since 1958.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. in Loretto, Kentucky, and was among the first to use wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain.

Production & Style

Maker's Mark uses wheat rather than rye in its mash bill, giving the bourbon a softer, more rounded character than many other classic bourbon brands.

Signature Style

Soft, Sweet, Round
The taste offers a soft, round character with notes of caramel, vanilla and a light sweetness from the wheat.
