Barbeito Madeira

From a dark period during the Second World War to being called "the Lafite of Madeira" by Jancis Robinson herself. Barbeito is family-run Madeira across three generations.

  • Bottle of Barbeito Boal Reserva 5 year Portuguese Madeira wine
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0120

Vinhos Barbeito was founded in 1946, at a time when the Madeira industry was in decline, and has since grown into one of the island's most respected producers.

    Expert's Description

Barbeito Boal Reserva is a Fortified Wine from Madeira, Portugal, with an alcohol content of 19%. Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos, a former accountant for rival house Borges, saw an opportunity amid the industry's decline and began buying substantial stocks of old vintages from important families. After his death in 1985, his daughter Manuela de Vasconcelos took over management, and under her leadership Barbeito became, in 1993, the first Madeira producer to voluntarily switch its entire production to bottle ageing - today the house is one of only eight remaining Madeira producers. The Boal grape gives a medium-sweet style, and the Reserva designation indicates an average ageing time of around 5 years.

    Item no.: 22227865480-67688

Barbeito Sercial Reserva Velha 10 year is a classic, dry Madeira with the elegant freshness and acidity that the Sercial grape is known for.

    Expert's Description

Barbeito Sercial Reserva Velha 10 year is a Fortified Wine from Madeira, Portugal, made from Sercial with an alcohol content of 19%. The Barbeito house was founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos and in 1993 was the first Madeira producer to voluntarily switch its entire production to bottle ageing. This edition is aged for at least 10 years in oak casks using the traditional canteiro method, where slow ageing under the sun's warmth gives depth, finesse and a distinctive nutty complexity. Sercial is the driest of Madeira's classic grape varieties and is typically grown high up on the island's slopes, where the cool climate preserves the grape's characteristic acidity.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Lively and aromatic on the nose with notes of citrus, dried fruits, roasted nuts and a hint of salty minerality.

    Palate

Dry, taut and precise on the palate with fine acidity, light bitterness, orange peel and almonds.

The finish is long and clean.

    Serving & Food Pairing

    Did You Know?

The canteiro method, used to age this Sercial, involves storing the casks in attics or warehouses where they are naturally exposed to the sun's warmth over the years - a slower and more prestigious method than the faster estufagem technique used for cheaper Madeira wines.

About Barbeito Madeira

Vinhos Barbeito is one of Madeira's most respected wine houses, known for handcrafted wines with deep respect for the island's classical roots. The house produces some of the most sought-after Madeira wines on the market and has, across three generations, held to a philosophy that true quality demands time and patience.

History & Background

Vinhos Barbeito was founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos, at a time when the Madeira industry had ground almost to a halt because of the Second World War. Mário believed in the future and in the idea that the value of true Madeira could only rise as production of young vintages declined. His daughter Manuela gradually took over the business in the 1970s, and in the mid-1990s she began handing the reins to her son Ricardo Freitas, who brought fresh energy and deep respect for the classical roots into the house.

Production & Style

Barbeito's wines are made using traditional Madeira methods, where the wine is heated and oxidised over long periods to achieve the characteristic complex, lightly caramelised style. Ricardo Freitas's craftsmanship earned him Portugal's Winemaker of the Year in 2010, and Barbeito's 20-year-old Malvasia was named Portugal's wine of the year in 2011.

Signature Style

Complex, Nutty, Caramelised
The flavour offers dried figs, nuts and caramel, with a lively acidity that gives the Madeira its characteristic freshness despite years of ageing.
