Port Charlotte Whisky

Port Charlotte Whisky

“It was Jim’s idea,” says Mark Reynier, CEO of Bruichladdich.  Mark is referring to the initiative to resurrect the distillery in Port Charlotte.  With the closure of the Inverleven Distillery in 2003, Master Distiller Jim McEwan saw an opportunity to purchase the existing equipment before demolition.  A team led by Bruichladdich’s General Manager, Duncan McGillivray, ventured to Dumbarton and dismantled the distillation equipment, bolt-by-bolt, and shipped it by barge back to Islay.

Though plans to put Islay’s ninth distillery into production have unfortunately met with delay, for all intents and purposes, this project is still a ‘go’.

For those not in the know, Port Charlotte is destined to be Islay’s next destillery. Pieces are coming together, and it is only a matter of time until whisky flows from the stills in the village of Port Charlotte. From 1829 through 1929 the Lochindaal Distillery produced a peated malt whose resonance lingered long enough to lead to Bruichladdich’s plans of renaissance.  The buildings in Port Charlotte are still in tact from a time when the heavy hand of prohibition led to the Lochindaal Distillery being mothballed, however the last known bottling from this distillery was opened and drunk in 1963.

  • Bottle of Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Heavily Peated from Bruichladdich
    Item no.: 22227865414-18901

Ten years is enough to tame a wild whisky without putting out the fire. Port Charlotte 10 Year Old shows how refined a heavily peated whisky can become once time is allowed to work on the smoke.

    Expert description

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Heavily Peated is a peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Bruichladdich, matured in bourbon and wine casks and bottled at 50%.

The whisky is distilled from 100% Scottish barley and matured in a combination of American bourbon casks and French wine casks, giving a deep and nuanced flavour profile. The modern take on traditional smoky whisky shows the distillery's ability to combine power with finesse.

Ten years of maturation tames the raw, youthful smoke and instead lets vanilla, oak and a mineral edge come through alongside the peat.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Marked peat smoke, sea salt and citrus, with a light floral note and vanilla and toasted malt beneath the smoke.

    Palate

Full-bodied and balanced with a distinct but elegant smoke, accompanied by sweet malt, caramel, spice and a mineral edge.

    Finish

Long, warm and smoky with notes of ash, oak and a lingering sweetness.

Port Charlotte is peated to around 40 ppm, which is heavy compared to most Islay whiskies, but still far below Octomore's extreme levels from the same distillery.

  • Bottle of Port Charlotte PMC:01 from Bruichladdich Cask Exploration series
    Item no.: 059763-615-235

Islay speaks with many voices, but Port Charlotte's is deep, briny and thick with tar. PMC:01 is the sixth release in the distillery's Cask Exploration series, where the peated Islay character meets the fruit-laden oak of Pomerol wine casks for the very first time.

    Expert description

Port Charlotte 2013 PMC:01 is a peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, first matured in bourbon casks and later finished in French Pomerol wine casks, bottled at 54.5%.

Port Charlotte is Bruichladdich distillery's peated single malt, distilled on the same Victorian equipment on Islay's west coast as the distillery's unpeated core range, but taken to a far higher phenol level. PMC:01 is made from Concerto barley peated to 40 ppm and is the sixth bottling in the Cask Exploration series, where the distillery studies what different cask types do to the same peated spirit.

The whisky was distilled in 2013 and spent its first four years in first-fill bourbon casks, before being moved in 2017 into Pomerol wine casks from Bordeaux's Right Bank, one of the world's most sought-after red wine regions. It's the first time Port Charlotte spirit has been allowed to mature in this cask type, and the result is a whisky where salty Islay peat meets dark berries and tanned leather from the wine casks.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Blackberry, plum and tanned leather sit on top of a solid base of peat smoke and brine. A tart edge of red berries, a touch of rose and a whisper of honey soften the maritime weight.

    Palate

Dry smoke and salt water arrive first, quickly followed by dark berries, clove and a deep, leathery tannin from the wine casks. The fruit is sweet without tipping into sugariness, and the peat keeps everything grounded with an earthy weight.

    Finish

Long and smoky, with a finish of dried plums, spiced clove and a whisper of ash that lingers well after the last sip.

  • Bottle of Port Charlotte PC6 from Bruichladdich, an early peated release
    Item no.: 22227865414-112

PC6 is one of the early Port Charlotte releases, from a time when the series was still finding its shape. Distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2007, it shows the young, raw power that set the direction for the house's peated style.

    Expert description

Port Charlotte PC6 is a peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Bruichladdich, matured for 6 years and bottled at 61.6%.

PC6 is one of the early numbered Port Charlotte releases, peated to 40 ppm and distilled in 2001, shortly after Bruichladdich was revived as a distillery. The whisky was bottled in 2007 after 6 years of maturation, at a high natural cask strength of 61.6%.

The young age combined with the high strength gives a raw, intense peat character, setting it apart from later, more rounded Port Charlotte releases with longer maturation.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Direct peat smoke and sea salt, with a young, grainy sweetness and a hint of citrus beneath the smoke.

    Palate

Powerful and raw with intense peat, black pepper and an oily, full texture carried by the high strength.

    Finish

Long and smoky with a dry, ashy finish and a persistent warmth.
