Wolfburn Whisky

Just 350 meters from the ruins of a distillery that closed back in the 1860s, a new Wolfburn rose in 2013 as mainland Scotland's northernmost distillery. All that remains of the original still house is its foundation stone, but the stream it was named after still runs through Thurso, supplying the new distillery with water. It's a rebirth where history quite literally flows on through the same stream, a century and a half later.

About Wolfburn Whisky

Wolfburn is mainland Scotland's northernmost distillery, reborn in 2013 just 350 meters from the site of a historic distillery of the same name that closed in the 1860s. The new distillery draws its water from the same stream, the Wolf Burn, which runs through the town of Thurso and gave the original still house its name. For beginners, Wolfburn offers a fresh, clean whisky shaped by the harsh northern climate, while connoisseurs appreciate the story of a distillery literally risen from the ashes after more than a century in obscurity.

History & Background

The original Wolfburn distillery was established in 1821 in Thurso but closed as early as the 19th century, and over time most of the site disappeared, leaving only the foundation stone as evidence of its existence. In 2013 the name was revived when an entirely new, modern distillery was built within 350 meters of the original site. Water for the new production still comes from the Wolf Burn stream, the same source that gave the historic distillery its name nearly two centuries earlier. The rebirth made Wolfburn mainland Scotland's northernmost distillery and one of the most striking examples of how old Scotch whisky names can return to life.

Production & Style

Wolfburn distills on a smaller scale with a focus on craft quality, using water from the local Wolf Burn stream, after which the distillery is named.

Signature Style

Fresh, Clean, Nordic
The flavor offers a fresh, clean character shaped by the harsh climate of Scotland's northernmost reaches.
