Fettercairn Whisky

Fettercairn Highland Whisky

The Fettercairn whisky distillery lies not far from the River Esk in the Eastern Highlands. Here, at the foothills of the untamed Cairngorm Mountains, Fettercain sits in its namesake town, far from any other Scotch distillery, its cooling waters trickling down from the untamed peaks. Originally sited a good two miles further up the slopes of the Cairngorms, the Fettercairn distillery was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, who licensed it a year later.

In 1830, Sir Alexander sold the distillery as well as Fasque Estate to Sir John Gladstone, father of William Ewart Gladstone who would be Prime Minister on four occasions over the course of the 19th century and, during which time, he would not only legalize the selling of bottled whisky to the public, but also scrap the Malt Tax.

In 1887, a fire rendered the distillery almost totally destroyed and it did not reopen until 1890. Fettercairn closed in 1912 and production did not recommence until 1939 when Associated Scottish Distillers acquired the distillery. Today, Fettercairn distillery produces light, balanced whiskies, the only official bottling being a twelve year-old which replaced the previous ten year-old. There are just a handful of independent bottlings. Fettercairn is at present under Whyte and Mackay ownership following purchase in the 1970s.

Fettercairn 12 Years Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery Fettercairn, located at the foot of Scotland's Cairngorms, was established in 1824 by Alexander Ramsay. Crystal clear mountain water is not only used as an ingredient in the whiskies, the distillery also uses it to cool the copper in the stills.
From their unique cooling ring, the crystal clear mountain water flows down the outside of the stills, creating more condensation inside and ensuring only the finest vapors rise to the top, ready to be collected.

Local history tells us that when the Fettercairn dunnage warehouse was built, the builders put an entire bottle of whisky into the stone walls as a good luck charm. On September 20, 1861, the Ramsay Arms (still the village pub) was visited by Queen Victoria and her husband Albert, who had sneaked away from nearby Balmoral. All in secret, they enjoyed drinks and a meal. Later, the villagers erected a monument to commemorate the visit, the impressive arch still stands in the center of the village. Fettercairn 1996/2014 Signatory 17 Year Old Single Highland Malt Whisky 46%

Fettercairn 1996 from Signatory is a classic Highland bottling that showcases the distillery’s clean, fruity style in an elegant and mature expression. After 17 years in a single hogshead cask (cask #4339), the whisky has developed a beautiful balance of natural sweetness, gentle spice and deep malt character – all preserved in its most authentic form, being both un‑chillfiltered and natural colour.

On the nose, soft notes of ripe barley, citrus oil, vanilla and light tropical fruit appear, followed by a touch of fresh oak and honey. The palate is rounded and full, with classic Fettercairn tones: malt, light caramel, fresh fruit and a discreet spicy warmth from the cask. The finish is long, clean and lightly mineral with a dry elegance that reveals both the whisky’s age and the calm maturation of the hogshead.
