Jawbox Gin

A Northern Irish gin from Belfast, named after the plainest thing imaginable: the ceramic wash basin that once stood in the bathhouses of the city's great shipyards. The name is a nod to Belfast's proud shipbuilding heritage, back when the city built some of the largest vessels on earth. There is something disarming about a gin that skips the fancy French words and owns its working-class roots instead.

Named after the iconic sink found on the outer walls of Belfast's streets, this gin brings local Black Mountain heather together with classic gin botanicals in a slow, traditional distillation.

    Expert's description

Jawbox Small Batch Belfast Cut Irish Classic Dry Gin is a Northern Irish gin from the Jawbox Spirits Company, bottled at 43%.

The gin is built on eleven botanicals, including juniper, lemon, cubeb pepper, angelica root, coriander seed, cassia bark, orris root, grains of paradise, cardamom, liquorice root and local Black Mountain heather.

Most botanicals are steeped and boiled, while three of them are vapor infused to preserve their delicate aroma.

The gin is distilled slowly in a traditional copper pot still, after the botanicals have steeped overnight in the warmed spirit, giving maximum influence from each ingredient.

About Jawbox Gin

Jawbox is a Northern Irish gin from Belfast, named after the local slang term for a ceramic wash basin historically found in shipyard workers' bathhouses. For newcomers it is an approachable, citrus-forward gin with a soft touch of chamomile, while the story behind the name gives the bottle a genuinely local identity, standing apart from the many gin brands that lean on royal or aristocratic references.

History & Background

The name references Belfast's proud shipbuilding history, where "jawbox" was the local word for the large wash basins at the shipyards, including the legendary Harland & Wolff, where the Titanic was built. The gin was created as a tribute to the city's workers and their everyday life, back when the shipyards were Belfast's heart and soul. Today Jawbox is part of a new wave of Northern Irish spirits brands that deliberately draw on local history and dialect for their identity.

Production & Style

The gin is distilled from juniper and a composition of botanicals, including chamomile and citrus fruits.
