Makar is a Scottish gin from Glasgow Distillery Company, known as Scotland's first single estate gin. For newcomers it's a fresh, herbal gin with a clear, local identity; for collectors it's notable that the distillery grows some of its own botanicals on its own land, creating a direct field-to-bottle connection, a model that is extremely rare in the gin category and sets Makar apart from most other Scottish gin houses.

History & Background

Glasgow Distillery Company was established as the first new whisky and spirits distillery in Glasgow in over 100 years, and Makar Gin was created as part of this revival of the city's spirits tradition. From the start the ambition was to break with the gin category's typical reliance on imported botanicals by instead growing select herbs directly on the distillery's own land. That made Makar Scotland's first recognised 'single estate' gin, a designation underscoring the unbroken line from field to bottle. Since launch the distillery has expanded its range with more gin expressions, but the principle of local, traceable production has remained central to the brand's identity.
