Altiva Barao De Vilar

The Van Zellar family has been part of Portuguese wine history for fourteen generations, with roots dating back to the early 1600s. Barão de Vilar - founded in 1996 - is the relatively young branch of this ageing legacy, with the Altiva range showing the family's modern take on classic Port. It's a new label carrying old knowledge.

About Barão de Vilar

Altiva from Barão de Vilar is part of the Van Zellar family's fourteen-generation Port wine tradition, even though the house itself was founded in 1996. For newcomers it's an accessible entry into classic Port; for connoisseurs, the interest lies in the contrast between a young company name and one of Portugal's oldest wine families behind it.

History & Background

The house was founded in 1890 by José Ferreira and has been based ever since in Vila Nova de Gaia, where port wine is traditionally shipped to mature in the cool, humid climate along the river. The name Barão de Vilar comes from a local noble title and underlines the house's ambition to deliver quality in the classic Portuguese tradition. Over the years the house has expanded from pure port production to also include still Douro wines.

Production & Style

The grapes are grown on terraces in the Douro Valley and shipped to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine is fortified with grape spirit and matured in oak casks in the house's riverside cellars.

Signature Style

Fruity, Round, Classic
Expect ripe red berries, a touch of cocoa, and a round, warm sweetness.
