Cargo Cult Rum

The name Cargo Cult comes from a real and almost mystical story from the Pacific islands, where local populations during World War II experienced the endless supplies of American troops as something close to miraculous. When the troops disappeared, the dream of returning wealth became part of island folklore. The rum carries that story forward, as a tribute to hope and expectation.

  • Bottle of Cargo Cult Banana Spiced flavoured rum with banana
    Item no.: 059763-615-929

It was the brand's own ambassador in London who first discovered how well banana paired with Cargo Cult in cocktails - and bananas are hardly in short supply in the South Pacific.

    Expert description

Cargo Cult Banana Spiced is a spiced Rum from Australia, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 38%.

After Mario, Cargo Cult's brand ambassador in London, noticed how well banana complemented the rum in cocktails, the team spent six months experimenting to arrive at this release. The result is a balanced, dry spiced rum with a fully natural banana aroma and flavour - with no added sugar, so the rum's own character still shines through alongside the banana.

Cargo Cult is a small Australian rum brand that builds its rum from a blend of several Pacific islands and bottles it in small batches. Banana Spiced is one of three core variants in the range, alongside Navy Strength and Dry Spiced.

  • Bottle of Cargo Cult Dry Spiced rum from Papua New Guinea and Fiji
    Item no.: 059763-615-930

Rum from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea meets rum from the sunny island of Fiji - and to comply with Australia's strict rules, it is all spiced on a small vineyard in Orange, New South Wales.

    Expert description

Cargo Cult Dry Spiced is a spiced Rum from Australia, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 38.5%.

The rum combines matured rum from the South Pacific - from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea and from Fiji - spiced with cardamom, clove, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla. Because Australia's import and production rules are strict, the rum is blended and spiced on a small vineyard in Orange, New South Wales, then matured for up to three years in ex-bourbon casks under tropical heat.

It is precisely the absence of added sugar that sets Dry Spiced apart from many other spiced rum styles - the spices build the flavour without a layer of sweetness masking the rum's own character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Cardamom and clove with a hint of vanilla.

    Palate

Dry and spiced, with cinnamon and ginger building under the rum's own sweetness.

    Finish

Medium, dry and spiced without excessive sweetness.

  • Bottle of Cargo Cult Navy Strength rum from the Pacific
    Item no.: 059763-615-928

On some isolated South Pacific islands, people to this day wait for supplies to appear over the horizon again, just as they did with planes during the Second World War - hence the name Cargo Cult.

    Expert description

Cargo Cult Navy Strength is a Navy Strength Rum from Australia, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 54.5%.

The rum is composed of rum from Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Australia in a small batch production, named after the "cargo cult" phenomenon - the belief that supplies would once again arrive from the sky, as they did when allied planes supplied the South Pacific islands during the war. The Navy Strength designation refers to the high, undiluted strength that historically ensured the rum could ignite gunpowder aboard naval ships.

Cargo Cult is a small Australian rum brand that blends rum from several Pacific islands and bottles it in small batches with no added sugar, letting the raw, powerful character of the different origins come through.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Powerful and molasses-heavy, with a hint of tropical fruit.

    Palate

Intense and warm, with wood and spice from the ex-bourbon casks.

About Cargo Cult Rum

Cargo Cult Rum is named after the Pacific islands' cargo cult phenomenon and comes in several variants, all without added sugar. For newcomers it's an accessible, clean rum experience; for connoisseurs, the interest lies as much in the story behind the name as in the rum itself, giving the bottles a narrative dimension rarely found in the category.

History & Background

The cargo cult phenomenon arose on several South Pacific islands during and after World War II, when American troops left behind a wealth of material goods that local communities interpreted through their own spiritual understanding of the world. When the supplies stopped as abruptly as they had arrived, rituals and expectations emerged that the wealth would return. Cargo Cult Rum uses this story as its identity rather than a traditional distillery history, and the name serves as a reminder of how culture and economics can meet in unexpected ways.

Production & Style

The rum is distilled at various distilleries and then selected cask by cask, often unfiltered and without added color.

Signature Style

Varied, Authentic, Cask-Driven
The flavor varies by source distillery, but a clean, unfiltered cask character is common.
