Bols Genever Gin

In 1575, more than a hundred years before London truly embraced gin, the house of Bols was already distilling in Amsterdam. That makes Bols the name behind genever, gin's Dutch ancestor, and one of the oldest distillery brands in the world. Over the centuries, the house has developed several genever styles, from the older, robust Oude to a lighter, more modern version closer to classic gin.

Long before gin existed, the Dutch brewed genever, and Bols has been distilling juniper since the 1600s in the heart of Amsterdam.

    Expert's description

Bols Genever is a Dutch Genever from Lucas Bols, bottled at 42%.

Lucas Bols is the world's oldest distilled spirits brand, with roots dating back to 1575, and the first written proof that Bols distilled juniper comes from a 1664 record.

In 1820 Bols created a new genever recipe with a more accessible taste, which was already being shipped to America by 1823 and played an important role in the early cocktail culture of the USA.

Genever is made by combining maltwine, a distillate of rye, corn and wheat that resembles an unaged whisky, with neutral grain spirit and a total of 22 botanicals including juniper.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is gentle with juniper, grain and malt, spiced with a hint of vanilla and a whisky-like character.

    Palate

The palate is soft and complex, where delicate juniper meets the rich, grainy sweetness of maltwine with a hint of cherry.

    Finish

The finish leaves a warmth towards the end with earthy, grassy notes.

About Bols Genever Gin

Genever differs markedly from British gin by building on a malt wine base, giving a fuller, more whisky-like body than the light, juniper-driven London Dry style.

History & Background

Bols was founded in Amsterdam in 1575 and, over its long history, has developed several genever styles, including the older, more robust Oude and a lighter, more modern style closer to classic gin.

Production & Style

Malt wine is distilled and blended with botanicals, including juniper, a process markedly different from the pure grain spirit base British gin normally builds on.

Signature Style

Malted, Full-bodied, Historic
A full, almost whisky-like body from the malt wine meets classic gin botanicals, in a style markedly different from British London Dry.
