Ferdinands Gin

Two great spirits and wine families from Germany's Saarland region joined forces on a gin built around the Riesling grape. Ferdinand's is the result of an unlikely alliance between a distiller and a winemaker's daughter, and it tastes of both their centuries-old craft.

  • Miniature bottle of Ferdinand's Saar Quince Gin from Germany
    Item no.: 2222786539-6061

Behind Ferdinand's distillery in the Saar valley grow quince trees, and the freshly harvested muscatel quinces are blended here with the distillery's own Rausch Kabinett wine in a regional homage to British sloe gin.

    Expert's description

Ferdinand's Saar Quince Gin is a German quince gin, unaged and bottled at 30%.

The gin is built on over 30 finely balanced botanicals taken from the vineyards and their own cultivation, including lemon, thyme, juniper, rosehip, almond, roses and lavender.

The freshly harvested muscatel quinces, a rare pear quince variety grown behind the distillery, are macerated together with an infusion of the house's Rausch Kabinett wine.

The result is the distillery's regional homage to British sloe gin, where the quince's sweetness and tartness replace the sloe berry.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers delicate rose-like florals alongside the juicy, caramelised fruit tones of quince.

    Palate

    Item no.: 2222786539-1014

In the Saar valley, home to some of Germany's most celebrated Riesling vineyards, the Vallendar family had the idea of putting the grape itself into the gin. The result tastes as much of vineyard as of juniper thicket.

    Expert's description

Ferdinand's Saar Dry Gin is a German Gin distilled by Avadis Distillery in the Mosel region and bottled at 44%.

Master distiller Andreas Vallendar combines over 30 finely tuned botanicals, mainly from the estate's own cultivation and the surrounding region, with the finest Riesling grapes from the Saarburger Rausch vineyard.

Regional botanicals include sloe, rosehip, angelica, hop blossom and rose, while the lavender comes from fallow vineyard land in the Konzer Tälchen valley and the lemon-scented thyme is grown in the estate's own garden.

The Riesling grapes give the gin a light wine-like acidity and an aromatic depth that sets it apart from classic London Dry styles.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is floral and spiced with a clear wine-like undertone from the Riesling grapes, joined by juniper and lavender.

    Palate

The palate is complex with juniper and herbs up front, a fine acidity from the grapes and a delicate bitterness from hop blossom.

    Finish

The finish is dry and wine-like, with a last trace of lavender and lemon thyme.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972695

Down on the slate slopes of the Saar valley grows a Riesling known across the world of wine. At Ferdinands, it takes on a whole new life as the base for a dry, herb-scented vermouth.

    Expert's Description

Ferdinands Saar Dry Vermouth is a German dry vermouth made from Riesling from the Saar valley, bottled at 18% ABV. This dry vermouth from Ferdinands is the world's first vermouth infused with a distillery's own quality Riesling from the acclaimed German wine region Saarburger Rausch.

Ferdinands was created through a collaboration between Andreas Vallendar, master distiller and owner of Avadis Distillery in Wincheringen-Bilzingen, and Dorothee Zilliken from the renowned wine estate Weingut Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken in Saarburg. Avadis Distillery traces its roots back to 1824, and today Zilliken's Riesling from the classified slate vineyard Saarburger Rausch serves as the base wine for the vermouth. Regional herbs are added to the dry vermouth, including wormwood, which lends a cleansing bitterness to the floral aroma profile, resulting in a vermouth that's ideal for a classic Dry Martini.

For newcomers it's a stylish, floral gin built around the famous Riesling grape; for collectors it's notable that the pair behind the bottle represent two spirits and wine-producing families spanning several hundred years combined, giving Ferdinand's a rare depth of craft tradition.
