Philippines Rum

  • Dark rum bottle with Filipino label, Don Papa Gayuma
    Item no.: 222275555-66639

Gayuma means "love potion" in Filipino – a rum that seduces with smoke from Islay and sweetness from Rioja, born on the slopes of the dormant volcano Kanlaon.

    Expert Description

Don Papa Gayuma is a Filipino Rum made from 100% Negros sugarcane molasses and bottled at 40%.

The rum first matures in the volcanic climate at the foot of Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros, before being finished in a double finish in ex-Rioja and Islay whisky casks. This gives Gayuma its dark amber colour and a character that blends the rum's natural sweetness with a distinct touch of peat smoke – an unusual combination for a Filipino rum. The Don Papa brand is named after Papa Isio, a Filipino freedom fighter and local hero figure from Negros.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Powerful and full, with peat, vanilla and orange peel, supported by dried flowers, delicate oak and dried fruit.

    Palate

The smoke wraps around creamy tones of exotic fruit and vanilla, while light orange zest and deep cocoa unfold with a touch of clove and mint.

    Finish

Smoky and spicy finish moving toward cocoa, with red and tropical fruit, before the peat takes over in a long conclusion.

    Item no.: 22227865378-80

At the foot of the Kanlaon volcano on Negros, this rum matures for at least seven years in a hot, humid climate that quickly draws character from the cask.

    Expert Description

Don Papa Mount Kanlaon Small Batch is a Philippine Rum matured for a minimum of 7 years, bottled at 40%.

The rum is distilled and matured in small batches at the foot of Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros. The region's hot, humid climate promotes a rapid maturation process and an "Angel's Share" of up to 8%, meaning a significant portion of the rum evaporates from the casks during maturation. The result is a deeply golden rum with a copper glow and a full, aromatic character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fruity without being heady, with vanilla notes enveloping citrus fruits such as mandarin and grapefruit as well as yellow fruits such as ripe apricot.

  • La Tondeña Añejo 5 year old Vintage Flaske La Tondena Distillers Inc Philippine Rum 75 cl 40%
    Item no.: 22227865-7893

In the Tondo district of Manila once stood the distillery that supplied much of the Philippines with rum made from molasses rather than the traditional nipa palm sap. Añejo simply means "aged" in Spanish, and that's exactly what this bottle delivers — dark rum, rested in wood, in a country where the heat pushes maturation along faster than almost anywhere else on earth.

    Expert Description

La Tondeña Añejo 5 Year Rum is a Philippine rum aged in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from La Tondeña, founded in 1902 by Chinese immigrant Carlos T. Palanca Sr. in the Tondo district of Manila. The distillery was the first in the Philippines to produce alcohol from molasses instead of the local nipa palm sap, and Añejo Rum became for decades one of the country's most widely sold rum brands. In 2003 the company renamed itself Ginebra San Miguel, and the original La Tondeña labelling disappeared from shelves — this bottle predates that name change.

The rum is a blend of selected, older rum distillates rested in oak casks, giving it the soft, dark style Philippine rum is known for.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweet aromas of caramel and brown sugar, with a hint of coconut and a touch of ripe banana in the background.

    Palate

Soft and sweet with caramel, vanilla and a light note of orange peel that cuts through the heavier sugarcane character.

    Finish

Long and slightly sticky, with cinnamon and a last trace of orange lingering.

Ten years of ageing in former bourbon barrels gives this dark Philippine rum a depth of dark chocolate and raisin, far removed from the light style known from Tanduay's white editions.

    Expert Description

Tanduay 10 Year is a Philippine Rum aged a minimum of 10 years in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and bottled at 40%.

The rum is produced by Tanduay Distillers, the Philippine house with roots dating back to 1854, as part of the broader range alongside the house's white and spiced editions. The dark amber colour and the ten years of ageing give Tanduay 10 Year a markedly more complex profile than the brand's younger rums, with clear influence from the former bourbon barrels. The edition has won a gold medal at the World Spirits Competition as well as awards at both the PR%F Awards and The Spirits Business Asian Masters 2024.

    Expert Description

Tanduay Overproof is a Philippine Rum, a blend of column and pot still distillates aged a minimum of 3 years in once-used American oak barrels, bottled at 50.5%.

The rum is produced by Tanduay Distillers by combining column-distilled and pot still-distilled rums, which are then aged for at least three years in previously used American oak barrels. The high strength of 50.5%, equivalent to 101 proof, gives the rum extra intensity without compromising the smoothness the brand is known for. Tanduay, the world's best-selling rum brand by volume, shows a different side here, where Filipino rum is finished in casks from the French sweet wine Sauternes.

    Expert Description

Tanduay Sauternes Cask Finished is a Filipino Rum, finished in Sauternes casks, bottled at 42%.

The rum is produced by Tanduay Distillers in the Philippines, a distillery with roots dating back to 1854 and today one of the world's largest rum producers. This release differs from Tanduay's more accessible expressions like Silver and Gold by undergoing a finishing period in casks that previously held Sauternes, a French sweet wine from the Bordeaux region known for its honeyed sweetness and notes of apricot and honey. The casks add an extra layer of fruit sweetness and complexity to the rum.

  • Velier 2024 Rainforest Philippines Pure Single Rum 58%
    Item no.: 2225916-378774

Deep in the rainforest of Mindanao, where the air hangs thick with cane and wet earth, a distillery most people have never heard of has just bottled its very first release. Rainforest 2024 is that first attempt, aged where it grew.

    Expert's description

Rainforest 2024 Philippines Pure Single Rum is a Philippines Pure Single Rum matured in ex-Chardonnay casks and bottled at 58%.

The rum comes from Rainforest Distillers, founded in 2015 by master distiller Marc Schulze in Bukidnon on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. Schulze is also behind Kasa Kaña Rum Agrikultura, and Rainforest 2024 marks the distillery's first bottling in the Habitation Velier range – a genuine world première for a country that barely registers on the rum map yet.

The rum is distilled from the local heirloom cane variety Manpu and fermented for 9 to 11 days with dunder and muck that has itself rested in the tropical Bukidnon biome. After pot still distillation – which earns the rum its Pure Single Rum status under the Gargano Classification – it spent 20 months in ex-Chardonnay casks maturing inside the rainforest itself. The tropical heat and humidity push the Angels' share above 10% a year. No sugar is added, and the rum is bottled at cask strength.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh cane juice meets pineapple, lime and coconut milk, with vanilla and a whisper of camphor emerging as it opens, alongside something close to freshly cut sugarcane.

    Palate

Clean and lively, with a medicinal edge, liquorice and a faintly oily texture that carries the cane character all the way through.

    Finish

Long, dry and citrus-fresh, with traces of pear and pineapple, dressed in floral and herbal notes reminiscent of a lime and basil tart.

    Investment Potential

Medium. Rainforest 2024 is the very first bottling from a brand-new distillery within the Habitation Velier range, and past "world première" releases in the series have historically drawn strong collector interest and traded well above release price once sold out.

    Did You Know?

Because the casks mature inside the rainforest itself rather than a conventional warehouse, more than 10% of the rum evaporates into the jungle air every single year – over five times what a typical Scotch warehouse loses annually.
