David Nicholson Whiskey

A bourbon name with roots reaching back to 1843 - named after a Louisville wholesaler who sold whiskey long before bourbon became a protected category. The name lay dormant for decades before being revived by the modern spirits house Luxco. Today the whiskey is produced in Kentucky, where grain and limestone-filtered water remain the foundation.

    Expert description

David Nicholson 1843 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's flagship, based on the original wheated recipe from 1843, bottled at 50%. David Nicholson started in 1843 as a grocer who distilled his own bourbon recipe in the back room of his general store in St. Louis. The recipe, a wheated mash bill, was passed down unaltered through generations, and later the brand's iconic '43' bourbon was hand-crafted by none other than Julian 'Pappy' Van Winkle and W.L. Weller at the Stitzel distillery. The Van Winkle family owned the brand until 2000, when it was acquired by Luxco.

About David Nicholson

History & Background

David Nicholson originally started as a wholesaler and later a whiskey broker, long before the US government formalised bourbon as a legally protected category in 1964. Signature Style

Caramel, Nutty, Historic
Caramel and dried nuts give a classic, round bourbon profile honouring its long history back to 1843.
