Myken Gin

On the small Norwegian island of Myken, where the sea is a neighbour on every side, gin is distilled with ingredients found almost nowhere else. It's a spirit shaped by the island's extreme isolation and character.

  • Bottle of Myken Arktisk Fadlagret Sommergin from Norway
    Item no.: 2222786539-2021-02-0002

Myken takes its signature Sommergin and lets it rest in casks that previously aged peated Myken Whisky, adding both a golden colour and new layers of flavour.

    Expert's description

Myken Arktisk Fadlagret Sommergin is a Norwegian cask-aged gin from Myken Destilleri, bottled at 47%.

The base is Myken Arktisk Sommergin, with the same local botanicals from and around the island, including juniper, cloudberries, redcurrants, blueberries, crowberries, sorrel, oarweed, meadowsweet, adder's fern, scots lovage, rhubarb, rose root and sea buckthorn.

The gin ages for 7 months in 40-litre ex-sherry casks that previously held peated Myken Whisky, adding vanilla and citrus notes from the oak.

The cask ageing gives the gin a more golden colour than the unaged version, while the many flavours from the Sommergin's botanicals remain clearly present.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is long and complex with juniper, citrus and pine needles, supported by vanilla from the cask.

    Palate

The palate offers redcurrant, cloudberry and herbs, with a new layer of vanilla and oak.

    Finish

The finish is full-bodied and warm with a hint of smoke from the whisky cask.

On the remote island of Myken in Nordland, the distillery harvests all its botanicals locally, from cloudberries to sea buckthorn, creating a gin that tastes of the Arctic summer.

    Expert's description

Myken Arktisk Sommergin is a Norwegian gin from Myken Destilleri, bottled at 47%.

All botanicals are found on or near Myken, including the island of Sjurøya, the largest in the archipelago, and include juniper, cloudberries, redcurrants, blueberries, crowberries, sorrel, oarweed, meadowsweet, adder's fern, scots lovage, rhubarb, rose root and sea buckthorn.

Unlike the distillery's Vintergin, the Sommergin is based on purchased spirit and uses only local herbs, giving it a milder character.

Where the Sommergin sticks strictly to the island's own plants, Vintergin blends local botanicals with spices sourced from distant lands, from the distillery that first put Myken on the gin map.

    Expert's description

Myken Arktisk Vintergin is a Norwegian gin from Myken Destilleri, bottled at 47%.

The gin combines exotic botanicals such as citrus peel, coriander seed and grains of paradise with local ingredients like juniper, rose root and sea buckthorn from around Myken.

Vintergin is the distillery's original gin and was the one that first brought Myken Destilleri attention, before the Sommergin came along later.

The combination of exotic spice and Arctic locality makes Vintergin a more spiced, complex contrast to the milder Sommergin.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is fresh with juniper and citrus fruits plus a hint of Arctic herbs and berries.

    Palate

The palate offers a balanced interplay of juniper, sea buckthorn and subtle spice notes.

About Myken Destilleri Gin

Myken Distillery is located on the remote island of Myken off the Norwegian coast, where a tiny permanent population and a rugged climate shape the distillery's approach to production. For newcomers the gin is a fresh introduction to Nordic terroir in the glass; for connoisseurs it's notable that the same distillery, celebrated internationally for its whisky, also applies its craft to gin with local, maritime-influenced botanicals.

History & Background

Myken Distillery was established on the island of the same name in an effort to bring new life and livelihood to one of Norway's most remote communities, where the permanent population can be counted in double digits. Whisky became the distillery's first and best-known product, but gin quickly followed as a natural extension, built on local herbs and plants from the island's rugged nature. Today Myken is one of the most talked-about Nordic micro-distilleries, precisely because of its extreme location.

Production & Style

The gin is distilled with local, maritime-inflected botanicals, giving it a fresh, salty character tied to the island's harsh nature.

Signature Style

Salty, Fresh, Maritime
The flavor offers a fresh juniper base complemented by subtle, salty and maritime notes.
