Caroni Rum

There's rum you drink, and then there's Caroni, rum you hunt down. The Trinidad distillery closed over twenty years ago, and that's exactly what turns every remaining bottle into a race against time for collectors worldwide. With its tarry, almost petrol-like character, Caroni has become a cult name, driven by one simple, unrelenting fact: the stocks only ever shrink.

  • Caroni 1997 2022 Valinch Mallet 24 Year Traditional Trinidad Rum bottle
    Item no.: 2227865479-1106-197280322-127

The Caroni distillery in Trinidad closed over 20 years ago, but the last casks from its heavy, cult-status production still surface at independent bottlers like Valinch & Mallet.

    Expert Description

Caroni 1997/2022 Valinch & Mallet 24 Year Traditional is a Trinidad Rum from a single cask, aged for 24 years and bottled at 57.9%.

The rum comes from the Caroni distillery, founded in 1923 on the site of an old sugar factory in Trinidad, with both column and pot still equipment, which in its day supplied heavy, powerful rum to the British navy. The Trinidad government sold the distillery to Angostura in 2001, and production ceased the following year. In 2004, Italian rum expert Luca Gargano discovered a warehouse full of forgotten casks at the abandoned distillery, sparking what many collectors now call Caronimania. This cask, number 887, was selected by Valinch & Mallet and yielded a total of 245 bottles. The rum was distilled in 1997 and aged for 24 years before being bottled in 2022.

The result is a dark, earthy rum with the characteristic "heavy", almost rubbery depth that has become Caroni's hallmark among collectors worldwide.

About Caroni

Caroni is the closed Trinidad distillery whose industrial, tarry rum today ranks among the most sought-after in the entire rum world. The rum was distilled on a column still with a distinctive, petrol-like profile that was once common in Caribbean industrial rum but is now seen as a unique, almost unmatched style. For beginners, Caroni can feel harsh and challenging, but for collectors, every bottle is an investment: with the distillery closed and stocks dwindling, prices climb year after year, and Caroni now ranks among the most coveted names at international rum auctions.

History & Background

The Caroni distillery in Trinidad produced industrial rum in large volumes for most of the 20th century, primarily for blends and bulk sale rather than its own brand. When the distillery finally closed in the early 2000s, the remaining cask stocks were sold on to independent bottlers, who have since released them under the Caroni name. What was originally a rugged, inexpensive industrial rum has, as stocks have dwindled, evolved into one of the rum world's most sought-after cult names. Today, collectors around the world chase the last bottles with the same intensity whisky collectors chase closed Scottish distilleries.

Production & Style

The rum was distilled on column stills with a highly distinctive, tarry, petrol-like profile that has become a hallmark of the style.
