La Madre Vermouth

The name La Madre simply means 'the mother' – a tribute to the recipes passed down through generations of Catalan vermouth houses. In the Spanish aperitivo tradition, this is the vermouth young producers look back to when they want to learn the craft from the ground up.

In the hilly landscape of Terra Alta, south of the Ebro river, where the Mediterranean sun bakes the old vineyards, lies the small town of Batea. Here La Madre is born, named after the mother herself, a tribute to the family traditions and herbal knowledge passed down through generations. Every bottle carries that warmth and authenticity forward.

    Expert's Description

La Madre Vermouth Rose is a Spanish Rosé Vermouth with 16% alcohol, created by oenologist Josep Maria Castillo in the town of Batea in the Terra Alta region south of Tarragona. The vermouth is made as a small, family-run project, where 32 different botanicals - 22 of them native to the region - are macerated in ceramic amphorae before the wine is added.

The base wine is a blend of white and red grape varieties from Terra Alta, and the pink colour comes from a careful composition of herbs, berries and spices rather than added colouring. The result is a vermouth that combines Mediterranean warmth with a distinct handcrafted character.

About La Madre

La Madre is a vermouth whose name poetically means 'the mother', a nod to the roots of its recipe. For newcomers it's an accessible, aromatic entry into Spanish vermouth culture; for collectors it's notable that La Madre represents the new wave of Catalan craft producers who, since the 2010s, have deliberately revived vermouth as a central part of the Spanish aperitivo tradition, after decades in which the category lived in the shadow of other spirit types.

History & Background

La Madre is a Spanish, Catalan vermouth belonging to the wave of modern, craft-driven vermouth producers that have emerged in Spain since the 2010s, as vermut culture has once again become a fixed part of the Spanish aperitivo tradition. The name - Spanish for 'the mother' - signals a warm, familiar, homemade identity, in contrast to large, industrial vermouth brands. The style is typically sweeter and spicier than dry French vermouth styles.

Production & Style

The vermouth is infused with herbs and spices on a wine base, giving it a spicy, aromatic character.
