Caribbean Rum

Caribbean Rum

  • Bottle of A. Michler Ron Espero Dos Continentes rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-99

Three cultures, three cask types, one glass - Dos Continentes travels from the Caribbean through Spain to France before landing in the bottle.

    Expert description

    A. Michler Ron Espero Dos Continentes is a Premium Caribbean Spirit from the Dominican Republic, bottled at 40%.

Dos Continentes ("Two Continents") undergoes a triple maturation process. The rum first rests for 6 years at its place of origin in an ex-bourbon cask, before being moved to a former sherry cask and then to a former banyuls cask from southern France for a further 4 years of solera ageing. This journey through three cask types and three cultures - Caribbean, Spanish and French - creates a fusion that, according to A. Michler, brings harmony between flavour and aroma.

The rum is blended and matured from carefully hand-selected Barbados rum. Behind the A. Michler brand is a rum house with roots stretching back to the historic Albert Michler distillery, today part of the wider Caribbean rum scene.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sherry sweetness and dark berries from the banyuls cask, over a base of Caribbean caramel.

    Palate

Full and complex, with layers of dried fruit, nuts and wine-like sweetness.

    Expert Description

Ron Abuelo XII Anos Two Oaks is a Panama Rum, distilled and aged by Varela Hermanos, aged 12 years and bottled at 40%.

    Item no.: 059763-615-865

Cinnamon, cardamom and clove layered on top of a legendary Trinidad rum - Tamboo takes its name from the bamboo drums that once echoed through the streets of Port of Spain.

    Expert description

Angostura Tamboo Spiced is a spiced Spirit Drink from Trinidad & Tobago based on Angostura rum, bottled at 40%.

Tamboo Spiced builds on Angostura's classic rum heritage and adds Caribbean spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and clove, naturally sweetened with sugar cane molasses. The name refers to "Tamboo Bamboo", the rhythmic bamboo drums used in Trinidad's street processions before steel pans took over in the 20th century - a tribute to the island's musical roots.

Behind the bottle is House of Angostura, founded in 1824 and today just as famous for its iconic aromatic bitters as for its rum. The distillery in Laventille, Trinidad, has spent decades distilling high-quality rum, and Tamboo Spiced is the house's answer to the growing demand for spiced rum styles.

Black Tears was Cuba's first spiced rum, and it still stands apart from the crowd by staying far less sweet than most competitors in the category.

    Expert description

Black Tears Spiced is a Cuban Spiced Rum flavoured with natural spices and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from the Vigia distillery in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, produced in a joint venture between the Norwegian company Island Rum Company and Zerus, the commercial arm of Cuba's state-owned sugar company Azcuba. Black Tears is marketed as Cuba's first spiced rum and sets itself apart from many other spiced rums through a low sugar content, typical of Cuban rum tradition, giving a more bittersweet than straightforwardly sweet profile.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Spices gently unfold under a cut of candied orange peel, with vanilla, cloves and nutmeg plus a hint of roasted coffee.

    Palate

Golden syrup, coffee, cocoa and a touch of peppery spice, with caramelised nuts, chocolate richness and gently oak-spiced wood.

    Finish

A gentle, mysterious sweetness of cocoa accompanies a punch of coffee, with a lingering, spiced trace of red chilli and more chocolate to mellow it.

    Item no.: 22227865578-55

For the fifth annual release, master blender Oliver Chilton has for the first time built the blend around a single country, Barbados, seasoned with rum from Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana plus drops of original pre-1970 navy rum.

    Expert Description

Black Tot 2024 Master Blenders Reserve is a Caribbean Rum, a blend dominated by Barbados rum with contributions from Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana, bottled at 54.5%.

The 2024 release is the fifth in Black Tot's annual Master Blender's Reserve series and the first to be built around the character of a single country. Here, Bajan rum makes up 60% of the blend to highlight Barbados' fruity, sweet and honeyed style, while rum from Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana adds depth. The blend is married with a perpetual reserve and a hand-selected collection of original navy rum flagons from pre-1970 bottles, aged in a combination of American and European oak and bottled un-chill filtered with no added sugar.

The result is a vibrant, full-bodied rum, where thick honey meets toasted vanilla and dried mango.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Full-bodied, fruity and spicy with pineapple, mint, strawberry, lime and chilli, as well as coconut.

  • Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum 70 cl 46.2%
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972446

On 31 July 1970 the last daily rum ration was handed out across the British fleet. Some sailors wore black armbands. Others tucked their tot into a pocket instead of drinking it. Almost three centuries of routine ended that afternoon, and the name Black Tot comes straight from it.

    The expert's description

Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum is a Blended Caribbean Rum matured in oak casks and bottled at 46.2%.

This is the house's core bottling and the clearest statement of what Black Tot is after. The blend draws on rums from four Caribbean origins, and each one has a job to do. Barbados lays down the soft, honeyed base. Trinidad adds a lighter column still tone of stone fruit and vanilla. Guyana brings weight and darkness with tonka bean, chocolate and liquorice. Jamaica contributes its unmistakable pot still funk, and even a small proportion of it is easy to pick out.

Maturation is 100% tropical, meaning the casks rested in the Caribbean rather than in a cool European warehouse. The heat makes the cask work considerably faster and the angel's share is far larger, so a young tropically matured rum carries depth that a much older European-matured rum often lacks. Nothing is added: no sugar, no flavourings, and the rum is Non-chill filtered. The 46.2% is not arbitrary either. It sits close to the strength the navy poured, and it keeps the rum intact once ice or lime enters the glass.

The recipe is the work of Black Tot's Head Blender Oliver Chilton. Among other awards it took Gold at The Spirits Business Rum & Cachaça Masters in 2026 and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2024.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe pineapple and molasses lead, then vanilla and a dusting of toasted cinnamon. Something heavier sits underneath — tonka bean and a thread of liquorice from the Guyana component.

    Palate

Full and faintly oily. Vanilla fudge, brown sugar and dried fruit that shift into cocoa and dark syrup. The Jamaican funk arrives mid-palate as a sharp, almost overripe banana edge that keeps the sweetness in line.

    Finish

Long and warm. Cinnamon, coffee bean and a dry, gently bitter oak note that lingers well after the last sip.

Behind this rum-based drink lies a sustainability project from William Grant & Sons, where discarded banana peels from the food industry get a new life.

    Expert Description

Discarded Banana Peel is a Caribbean Rum-based Spirit Drink, a whisky-cask-matured Caribbean rum infused with banana peels for two weeks, bottled at 37.5%.

The Discarded Spirits range from William Grant & Sons is built around sustainability: the banana peels used to flavour the rum come from a flavour house that only uses the fruit's flesh and would otherwise have thrown the peels away. Because the rum is infused with banana peel and other natural flavourings, it's sold as a spirit drink rather than rum.

The result is a sweet, dessert-like drink with a pronounced banana character, made primarily for cocktails and desserts rather than serious rum sipping.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Banana bread and caramelised toffee, with dried fruit and baking spice.

The casks that previously held Don Guido, a Pedro Ximenez over 20 years old, give this rum a sweetness that borders on sinful.

    Expert description

Dos Maderas Luxus 10+5 Years is a Rum from Barbados and Guyana, matured 10 years in the Caribbean and a further 5 years in Pedro Ximenez casks in Spain, bottled at 40%.

The rum is a blend of two English-style rums, where Barbados contributes sweetness and Guyana contributes fullness. After 10 years of maturation at the production sites in the Caribbean, the casks are sent to Williams & Humbert's cellars in southern Spain, where the rum matures for a further 5 years in casks that previously held Don Guido, a Pedro Ximenez sherry over 20 years old.
