In Vestmanna on the windswept Faroe Islands sits one of the world's most northerly distilleries. Here, Faer Isles Distillery tested eight different types of seaweed to find the one that best matched the juniper in their gin.
Expert's description
Faer Isles North Atlantic Dry Gin is a Faroese gin distilled with seaweed and bottled at 42.8%.
The gin comes from Faer Isles Distillery in Vestmanna in the Faroe Islands, which alongside gin also makes akvavit, vodka and whisky. After testing eight local seaweed varieties, the distillery settled on thongweed, which they found matched the juniper best and gave the gin its salty, maritime edge.
The result is a classic, dry gin with a distinct North Atlantic character, where the rugged Faroese climate and landscape can be traced directly in the glass.
