El Tequileno

El Tequileño is one of Mexico's oldest independently run tequila producers, founded right in the town of Tequila in 1959. From the high, iron-rich soils of Los Altos, the brand draws a spicy, full-bodied agave character quite different from the softer tequilas of the lowlands. The name is a nod to the town's role as the birthplace of the spirit itself.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1959 by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in the town of Tequila itself, the place historically credited as the birthplace of agave spirit distillation. The family deliberately kept production in town rather than relocating to the larger, industrialised facilities that came to define much of the category in the following decades. Through generational succession, El Tequileño has held on to traditional methods while many competitors switched to faster, more industrial processes. The result is a tequila that still tastes of the craft tradition it was founded on.
