Glenkinchie Whisky

South of Edinburgh, amid the Lowlands' rolling barley fields, Glenkinchie has been distilling since 1837 and still carries the nickname 'Edinburgh's malt'. The distillery was chosen as one of Diageo's six original Classic Malts in 1988, precisely because it so perfectly represents the light, grassy Lowland style. It's a whisky that proves delicacy can be just as memorable as strength.

  • Glenkinchie 10 year older one litre bottle of 100 cl with old label
    Item no.: 505956-807534-835

A litre rather than the usual 70 centilitres. That format was sold in airports, and this bottle has been standing since June 1990.

Please note: Part of the tax strip is missing, and the bottle has a small scratch or knock mark in the glass. The bottle came from Copenhagen Airport, June 1990.

    The expert's description

Glenkinchie 10 Year Old Version is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43% in a one litre bottle of 100 CL.

The ten year old was the distillery standard expression until it was replaced by the twelve year old. The change came because the two extra years in oak gave more vanilla, and the twelve has been the one on the shelves ever since.

Litre bottles like this were made for duty-free sales. Label, capsule and format all belong to that period, which makes the bottle as much a piece of airport history as a whisky.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Bright and floral with lemon, grass and a note of honey.

    Palate

Soft and light at 43% with citrus, malt and a mild spiced sweetness. The Lowland style is clear: clean and without weight.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and lightly grassy.

    Region/Country: Lowland, Scotland
Type: Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Age: 10 years

    Flavour profile

    Light · Floral · Citrus · Malty · Dry

    Investment potential

Medium. The litre format was phased out along with duty-free sales within the EU, and the ten year old no longer exists. Bottles with documented origin and date are easier to place with collectors than those without.

    Did you know?

Glenkinchie stopped malting its own grain in 1969, and the malting floors were turned into a whisky museum. The museum has been open to visitors ever since and is one of the oldest attractions of its kind in Scotch whisky.

  • Glenkinchie 12 year bottle with pale whisky and a green label
    Item no.: 22227865438-27

The Lowlands have only a handful of distilleries left, and Glenkinchie is the one Diageo put into the Classic Malts to represent the region. The twelve year old is the house expression.

    The expert's description

Glenkinchie 12 Year is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The style is light and dry with flowers and citrus, as Lowland malt traditionally is. The distillery moved from a ten year old to the twelve because the two extra years in oak gave more vanilla and a rounder middle.

Glenkinchie lies in a glen by the Kinchie Burn near Pencaitland in East Lothian, about fifteen miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is surrounded by farmland, and the barley has never had far to travel.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lemon, grass and meadow flowers with a note of vanilla and pale grain.

    Palate

Light and dry with citrus, malt and vanilla. There is a mild sweetness through the middle and a touch of spice, but no weight.

    Finish

Medium length, dry and lightly grassy with a hint of oak.

The name Kinchie is a corruption of De Quincy, the family who originally owned the land. The distillery sits in the glen by the Kinchie Burn, and both burn and distillery still carry a name nobody spells correctly any more.

  • Glenkinchie Distillers Edition 2003/2015 bottle in card box with vintage years
    Item no.: 22227865437-92

Amontillado is drier than oloroso and lays in nuts and salted fruit rather than dark sweetness. That is exactly the kind of cask a light Lowland malt can carry without disappearing.

    The expert's description

Glenkinchie Distillers Edition 2003/2015 is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a second maturation in amontillado sherry casks, bottled at 43%.

The whisky was distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2015 after twelve years. The first part of maturation took place in ordinary casks, after which the whisky spent a period in amontillado casks — what Diageo calls double maturation.

Distillers Edition exists for each of the Classic Malts distilleries, and each one was given its own type of sherry. Glenkinchie got amontillado, which is dry and nutty and does not flatten the light distillery style.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lemon and meadow flowers with nuts, dried apricot and a note of salted caramel from the cask.

    Palate

Softer and rounder than the standard bottling. Vanilla and citrus at the base with nuts, dried fruit and a dry sherry edge on top.

    Finish

Medium length and dry with nuts, spice and a lightly salted close.

    Flavour profile

Light · Nutty · Dry sherry · Citrus · Round

    Investment potential

Medium. The 2003/2015 vintage is discontinued, and Distillers Edition appears in new vintages every year, so the older ones quietly disappear from the shelves. It is a range people collect by vintage rather than by single bottle.

    Did you know?

Glenkinchie runs only two pot stills, but they are among the largest in Scotland. The wash still is charged with around 21,000 litres, and that kind of volume gives a light, clean spirit with long copper contact.

About Glenkinchie Whisky

Glenkinchie is a Lowland distillery south of Edinburgh, chosen as one of Diageo's six original Classic Malts. For a newcomer, it's a light, floral, grassy introduction to whisky, far from the weight of the Highlands or Islay; for the connoisseur, Glenkinchie represents the very definition of the Lowland style, and its proximity to Edinburgh makes it a popular stop for whisky tourists wanting a distillery visit without a long trip into the countryside.

History & background

The distillery was founded in 1837 and has historically been known as 'The Edinburgh Malt' due to its proximity to the capital.

Production & style

The whisky is distilled in unusually large pot stills and aged primarily in bourbon casks, giving it a light, grassy character.

Signature style

Light, Grassy, Floral
The flavor offers a light, floral character with a clear grassy, Lowland-typical imprint.
