Grifu Gin

In Sardinia, Grifu Gin is aged in hundred-year-old chestnut casks that previously matured the house's Vernaccia wines. The unusual thing about these casks is that they release no tannins, giving the gin an unusually creamy, soft and oily texture. It's a gin that carries the island's winemaking heritage forward in an entirely new way.

    Item no.: 2222786539-6084-2

Sardinia's Mediterranean herbs meet sharp lime zest in this crystal-clear gin from Silvio Carta, where citrus takes over entirely from the cask-aged sister edition.

    Expert's description

Grifu Lime Gin is an Italian gin from Silvio Carta, bottled at 40%.

The gin is built on thyme, juniper, fennel, sage and lime zest, a botanical composition that gives it its distinct Mediterranean, citrus character.

Unlike the house's cask-aged Old Grifu, this edition remains crystal clear and uncoloured, with citrus as the unmistakable centrepiece.

The combination of lime zest and sage gives a fresh, menthol-like edge that makes the gin particularly suited to cocktails.

    Expert's description

About Grifu Gin

Old Grifu is aged in 100-year-old chestnut casks previously used to mature the house's Vernaccia wines. The unique thing about these casks is that they release no tannins at all, resulting in a gin that is incredibly creamy, soft, round, oily and elegant. For the newcomer it's a surprisingly smooth gin compared to sharper London Dry styles; for the connoisseur, ageing in old wine casks is a rare technique in the gin world, one that draws a clear line between Sardinia's wine and spirits traditions.

History & Background

Grifu Gin is produced by the Silvio Carta distillery in Sardinia, a house with roots in winemaking, particularly the local Vernaccia grape that the island's winegrowers have cultivated for centuries. When the family decided to venture into gin, they deliberately chose to build on their own wine heritage rather than copy classic English styles, among other things by reusing the old chestnut casks from wine production. The name Grifu, Sardinian for griffon vulture, symbolises the watchful, proud bird that has circled the island's mountains for centuries.

Production & Style

The gin is distilled from juniper and Italian botanicals, often inspired by local herbs and citrus fruits.
