Long before gin existed, the Dutch brewed genever, and Bols has been distilling juniper since the 1600s in the heart of Amsterdam.
Expert's description
Bols Genever is a Dutch Genever from Lucas Bols, bottled at 42%.
Lucas Bols is the world's oldest distilled spirits brand, with roots dating back to 1575, and the first written proof that Bols distilled juniper comes from a 1664 record.
In 1820 Bols created a new genever recipe with a more accessible taste, which was already being shipped to America by 1823 and played an important role in the early cocktail culture of the USA.
Genever is made by combining maltwine, a distillate of rye, corn and wheat that resembles an unaged whisky, with neutral grain spirit and a total of 22 botanicals including juniper.
Tasting notes
Nose
The nose is gentle with juniper, grain and malt, spiced with a hint of vanilla and a whisky-like character.
Palate
The palate is soft and complex, where delicate juniper meets the rich, grainy sweetness of maltwine with a hint of cherry.
Finish
The finish leaves a warmth towards the end with earthy, grassy notes.
