Black Tot Rum

On 31 July 1970 at noon sharp, the Royal Navy raised a final glass – 'Black Tot Day', the moment more than 300 years of daily rum rations came to an end. Some sailors wore black armbands; others threw their empty tots overboard in protest. Black Tot revives that lost tradition, aiming to capture the very flavour the fleet drank that day.

Each year, Master Blender Oliver Chilton creates a new edition of Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve, and the 2024 edition places a special emphasis on the fruity side of navy rum, with a significant presence from Barbados. This year’s release features Barbados components making up 60% of the blend, including a 22-year-old rum from Mount Gay.

In addition, the blend contains a substantial amount of rum from Trinidad, along with smaller quantities from Jamaica and Guyana. Notable elements in this blend include a 26-year-old Caroni, a 25-year-old Clarendon, and a touch of 28-year-old New Yarmouth, creating a remarkable complexity.

In keeping with tradition, the rum also includes a small portion of last year’s Master Blender’s Reserve (just under 4%) and a bit of the original Navy rum. It is neither sweetened nor chill-filtered and is bottled at a pleasing strength of 54.5%.

The rum has a deep, dark amber color and a nose that bursts with tropical aromas of grilled pineapple, mint, strawberry, lime, chili, and coconut. The flavor is rich and buttery, gradually enveloping the palate with notes of manuka honey, banana, vanilla beans, and mango. The finish reveals hints of licorice and dark chocolate.

Black Tot Finest Caribbean consists of blended rums from various Caribbean islands, carefully composed by master blender Oliver Chilton. The blend consists of 5% 3 year old Jamaica rum, 20% unaged Guyana rum, 35% 5 year old Barbados rum, and 40% 3-5 year old Guyana rum. The rum is 100% tropically aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Enjoy it neat, but also try mixing it in a cocktail.

About Black Tot

Black Tot is a British rum created as a tribute to 'Black Tot Day' on 31 July 1970, when the Royal Navy ended its daily rum ration to sailors. For newcomers it's a rich, spiced rum carrying a slice of maritime history in every glass; for collectors, Black Tot is a rare chance to taste a reconstruction of the actual naval ration, built on Sukhinder Singh's acquisition of original 1970 stoneware flagons, making it one of the most sought-after historic rum releases on the market.

History & Background

For more than 300 years, British sailors received a daily rum ration of roughly an eighth of a pint of high-strength rum, until the Admiralty decided in 1970 that the tradition was incompatible with running modern warships and submarines. The Navy's remaining rum stocks were thereafter only poured on special occasions such as royal weddings. Decades later, rum connoisseur Sukhinder Singh of Elixir Distillers acquired some of the original 1970 stoneware flagons, and that find became the starting point for a modern blend inspired by the original naval ration, named Black Tot.
