On 31 July 1970, British sailors received their last daily ration of rum. Some wore black armbands. Others saved their tot in a pocket instead of drinking it. A tradition nearly 300 years old stopped that day, and the name Black Tot comes from it.

    Expert description

Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum is a Blended Caribbean Rum aged in oak casks and bottled at 46.2%.

It is the house's standard bottling and the bottle that best shows what Black Tot wants to do with rum. The blend builds on distillates from four Caribbean countries, and each country plays a clear role. Barbados lays down the soft and honeyed base. Trinidad gives a lighter column-distilled tone with stone fruit and vanilla. Guyana pulls in body and darkness with tonka bean, chocolate and liquorice. Jamaica contributes its characteristic funk from pot still, and even in a small proportion it can be clearly felt.

The rum is matured 100% tropically, meaning in the Caribbean and not in a cool European warehouse. The heat means the cask works significantly faster, and a young rum gains depth it would otherwise take many more years to acquire. No sugar has been added and no flavourings, and it is not chill-filtered. The 46.2% bottling strength is not accidental - it sits close to the strength of the navy's rum, and it holds the flavour together when ice or lime enters the glass.

The blend is the work of Black Tot's Head Blender Oliver Chilton. It has, among other things, taken Gold at The Spirits Business Rum & Cachaça Masters in 2026 and Double Gold at San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2024.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe pineapple and molasses first, then vanilla and a hint of toasted cinnamon. Behind it lies something darker and heavier - tonka bean and a touch of liquorice from the Guyana component.

    Palate

Full-bodied and slightly oily. Vanilla fudge, brown sugar and dried fruit, gradually turning into cocoa and dark syrup. The Jamaica funk shows up in the middle as a sharp, almost banana-like edge that keeps the sweetness in check.

    Finish

Long and warm. Cinnamon, coffee bean and a dry, lightly bitter oak note that lingers long after the last sip.

    Did You Know?

Black Tot owns the remains of the original navy rum from the Royal Navy's last supply - the so-called stone flagons, archived after 1970. That rum is used in the house's most expensive bottlings, while Finest Caribbean is the modern interpretation of the same idea.
