Amarula Liqueur

Amarula is South Africa's answer to creamy fruit liqueurs, made from the golden marula fruit that, according to local folklore, elephants simply can't resist. The tree fruits once a year, and the entire harvest goes into the liqueur.

Amarula Cream Likør from South Africa - Umm, it's deliciousAmarula is a South African cream liqueur with quite a story behind it. It's all about the fruit of the Marula tree, which grows in South Africa and is the basis for this likør. The tree bears fruit once a year and as the fruit ripens in the sun, alcohol is produced - this attracts elephants, among others, who act as indicators of when to start harvesting the fruit. After harvesting, two years are spent developing what becomes a likør with a great taste. Amarula is based on cream liqueur and has a vanilla and tropical fruit flavor. About Amarula Cream Likør

In just a few decades Amarula has become an internationally known name in cream liqueurs, up there with Baileys, but with its own exotic fruitiness from the marula tree. The liqueur is as much at home in a coffee cup as in a glass on its own, and its African origin story is a big part of the appeal.

History & Background

Amarula was developed by South African drinks company Distillers Corporation, aiming to create a creamy, export-friendly product built on a local, wild-growing raw material. The marula fruit has been harvested and eaten by local communities for centuries, long before it became a cream liqueur, and part of today's sales proceeds go to elephant conservation through the Amarula Trust.

Production & Style

The ripe marula fruits fall from the tree on their own and are collected by local harvesters in South Africa, after which the flesh is fermented and distilled into a spirit that is then aged two years in oak before being blended with cream.

Signature Style

Creamy, Fruity, Exotic
A smooth, creamy texture meets the marula fruit's characteristic, slightly tart sweetness, with notes of apricot and caramel underneath.

Did You Know?

The story that elephants get drunk on fallen marula fruit is a favourite part of Amarula's branding, though science is actually sceptical the fruit can ferment enough in an elephant's stomach to intoxicate it.
